MALONE 28,
GOUVERNEUR 8
The Franklin Academy Huskies shook
off the rain, wind, five first-half
turnovers and ended their
regular-season campaign with a 28-8
win over the Gouverneur Wildcats and
a 6-2 overall record. Jake Gravel
took the opening kickoff and just 17
seconds and 84 yards later, pounded
his feet in paydirt. With the
extra-point kick, the Huskies were
up 7-0 and looking like they might
cruise. But at halftime – and two
Malone fumbles and three pickoffs
later – it was still 7-0. Meanwhile,
for the first time this season,
Gouverneur found itself being pushed
around by the stout Malone front
line and struggled to gain yardage,
let alone try to capitalize on the
Huskies’ miscues. Malone Coach Greg
Marshall was pleased with his team’s
efforts in containing Gouverneur’s
rushers, especially Zach Cummings
who was contained to 62 yards total.
With adjustments at intermission,
the Huskies shut down Gouverneur to
open the third quarter, then drove
two quick scores. Brad Soulia dug in
from the two-yard line and Gravel
broke loose for a 53-yarder to
elevate the lead to 21-0 through the
third quarter. Taylor Hilyard went
to the house on a 20-yard manuever
to bust the game open at 28-0. The
Wildcats’ lone score game with 63
seconds remaining when Daniel Maloy
went end-around on a sweep to the
left, then added the extra two
points on a run to the right. Malone
will now draw a first-round bye in
the Northern Football Conference
Class A semifinals and will host the
winner of the Potsdam-Massena
semifinal for the championship in
two weeks. Meanwhile, Gouverneur
will travel to play top-seeded
Ogdensburg in the Class C semifinal
at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.

WEEK #7 GAME SUMMARIES |
|
PERU 20,
MASSENA 15
Despite heavy rain and a prevailing
crosswind for most of the afternoon
at the Apple Bowl, Peru quarterback
Rob Duquette delivered 14-of-20
passes, amassing 228 yards and a
pair of touchdowns to lead the
Indians to a 20-15 squeaker over the
Massena Red Raiders. The Raiders
struck first on the opening drive of
the game, marching 80 yards and
culminating in a 22-yard TD rush by
Evan Raymo. The Indians
counter-punched with 20 straight
points – Duquette to the air on a
10-yard strike to Connor Keleher,
then a pair of David Ragone scores –
for nine yards, then a catch-and-run
for 55 yards -- to stake out a 20-7
lead at the break. Raymo finished
off a Massena scoring drive on a
one-yard rush midway through the
third quarter to draw the Raiders
within five points, but defenses and
elements prevented any further
scoring. Ragone finished with a
game-high 19 carries for 81 yards.
Raymo led Massena with 15 carries
for 106 yards. Raider QB Taylor
Elsner pitched five times for 56
yards. Beekmantown will host Peru in
the Northern Football Conference’s
Class B Championship game at
Plattsburgh High School on Saturday
at 1:00 p.m. The Raiders will host
Potsdam in the Class A semifinal
game on Friday evening at 7:00 p.m.
BEEKMANTOWN
32, POTSDAM 12
The Beekmantown Eagles (8-0) closed
the 2009 regular-season campaign as
the only undefeated team in the
Northern Football Conference after a
solid 32-12 win over the Potsdam
Sandstoners. After the Eagles gave
up their first-ever lead of the
season, the Eagles took command with
a 19- point outburst in the second
quarter. Potsdam chewed up 80 yards
on the ground in its opening drive,
capped by a three-yard quarterback
sneak that registered the Eagles’
first deficit of the season 6-0
through the first quarter. But the
Eagles’ defense forced a Sandstoner
fumble on their own 29 and, five
plays later, made them pay on a
12-yard dash by Matt Durocher. With
the extra point kick, deficit gone
7-6. Durocher extended the Eagle
lead just 2:29 later when Durocher
broke loose and raced back to the
house from 39 yards out. Patrick
Manor followed with a two- yard
plunge for a score less than four
minutes later and the lead had
mushroomed to 19-7. Meanwhile,
Potsdam’s misfortunes were mired in
four turnovers and a botched punt.
In the second half, quarterback
Carter Frechette led his team with
104 yards rushing and 51 more
passing, chipped in two touchdowns –
on a five-yard pass, then a 79-yard
scamper that broke a shoestring
tackle and ended in the endzone.
Potsdam’s Shane McHenry plunged into
the end zone with just 0:27
remaining to cap the scoring. Jesse Bradish ran for a game-best 142
yards for the Sandstoners, replacing
the flu-stricken Zac Linsky.
Beekmantown will host Peru in the
Northern Football Conference’s Class
B Championship game next weekend.
However, due to reported drainage
issues and related field conditions,
the Eagles will host the game at
Plattsburgh High School on Saturday
at 1:00 p.m.
MORIAH 54,
PLATTSBURGH 12
In less than nine minutes of play,
the defending New York State Class D
finalists had capped four quick
scoring drives with extra-point
kicks and commanded a 28-0 lead. The
Vikings rushed by committee on
Friday night, using eight separate
ball carriers without the serves of
the conference’s leading rusher Ron
Schofield who was out due to
illness. Wally Edwards sandwiched a
12-yard touchdown and a 35-yard
fumble return between scampers by
the Gilbo brothers – Nick for 20
yards and Nate on a two-yard carry –
to blow open the contest early.
Edwards continued to take advantage
of the his extra touches in romping
for touchdowns of 32 and 80 yards
before the half. Plattsburgh had a
couple of scores of satisfaction in
the second half when James Stiger –
who led the game with 16 rushes for
93 yards – scooped up a Vikings
fumble and took it 55 yards to the
house in the third quarter, then
tacked on a 48-yard rush to paydirt
to slice the deficit to 41-12. Jalen
Beebe’s 14-yard run and Will
Burback’s 41-yard TD score capped
the night. The win was the fifth
straight for Moriah whose only
losses were both in overtime to a
pair of Class B opponents in weeks 2
and 3, will rest up next week with a
bye, then host the winner of
Ticonderoga vs. Tupper Lake in next
week’s semifinals.
SARANAC
CENTRAL 18, AUSABLE VALLEY 14
After two quick Saranac Central
touchdowns, AuSable Valley put the
brakes on the Chiefs and played some
of their stoutest defense of the
season. Saranac grabbed a 12-0 lead
at the end of the first quarter,
cashing in on their first two drives
with a 12-yard score from Dylan
Everleth and a two-yard quarterback
keeper from Ben Weightman after the
Chiefs recovered a Patriots’ fumble.
But AuSable, coming into the game
winless at 0-7, put up its biggest
fight of the season and into
position for a possible upset win.
Patriot Lance Sawyer capped a
65-yard scoring drive with a
three-yard TD run to open the second
quarter to make it 12-6. After Ben
Prentiss plucked a Ben Weightman
pass, Austin Case sent a “Hail Mary
pass” to a wide-open James
Montefusco in the end zone with time
running out in the second quarter,
but the wet ball slipped through his
hands. The Patriots’ Josh Ashline
took the second-half kickoff, broke
several tackles and jetted back 92
yards on the return. The Patriots
celebrated their first lead in front
of the home faithful when Prentiss,
who carried for a game-total 54
yards, took the ball for two extra
points and AuSable went ahead 14-12
just 0:23 into the third. The Chiefs
engineered just one remaining
scoring drive, a long 11-play,
84-yard time-consuming campaign,
then relied on its defense to tame
the upstart Patriots. Battling a
steady rain and a wet pigskin, the
ground game kept the ball contained
and the clock running. Everleth (23
carries, 158 yards) followed the
offensive-line blockers and punched
into the end zone from the one-yard
line to thrust the Chiefs back into
the lead 18-14 with still over ten
minutes remaining. The Pats counter
offer died at the 27-yard line.
Saranac then chewed up the balance
of the clock. The Chiefs open the
Northern Football Conference Class C
playoffs next week as the third seed
and will travel to Saranac Lake to
face the #2-seeded Red Storm.

Wilson Field. Earlier in the first
quarter, David Snyder intercepted an
Austin Case pass to set up a 42-yard
drive capped off by Ploof’s 36-yard
TD catch to give the Red Storm a 6-0
lead. Starting quarterback Forrest
Morgan threw three touchdown strikes
all in the first quarter, completing
a pass to David Snyder for 19 yards
and Ploof again for 12 yards to jump
the Storm to a 20-0 lead. Returning
from injury, senior quarterback
Brandon Patraw connected with Logan
McDougall for a two-yard catch and
C.J. Stewart broke an opening-drive
run in the second quarter for 47
yards as Saranac Lake cruised to a
32-0 halftime lead. The Patriots

second half, but the Red Storm
defense corraled Ausable Valley for
just 19 yards of total offense.
Morgan went 6-for-7 passing for 77

WEEK #7 GAME SUMMARIES |
|
TICONDEROGA
22, TUPPER LAKE 16
The Sentinels won a heart-stopper
with just two seconds left in the
game to beat Tupper Lake 22-16 and,
capture the Class D second seed and
forced the Lumberjacks to have to
travel back to Ticonderoga in two
weeks for the opening round of the
playoffs. Ti quarterback Rob Kearns
spun out to the left, then lasered
wide-open receiver Dan Morrison with
a 20-yard TD strike in the end zone
to snap a 16-all deadlock with two
ticks remaining. The last-gasp
end-zone volley capped a 94-yard,
three-minute drill to squeak out the
win. It came after Tupper Lake had a
chance to win on their previous
drive, which included four
successful fourth-down plays to keep
the drive alive. However, the Jacks’
possession ended on a fumble just
six yards from paydirt. All of the
last-second heroics followed a taut
defensive struggle. Tupper Lake
scored on the game’s first drive
when newly-activated running back
Josh Facteau dashed 10 yards to the
end zone. Zach Baldwin ran the
two-point conversion for a quick 8-0
lead. Kearns tied the game for
Ticonderoga with a 60-yard QB option
run and a keeper on the extra
points. With under two minutes
remaining in the half, Facteau (28
carries, 182 yards in his first
game) broke off a 56-yard touchdown
run and added the conversion rush to
jump the Jacks back into a 16-8
lead. On the final play of the third
quarter, Ticonderoga pulled even
when Morrison (18 totes, 134 yards)
scampered 15 yards to the house,
followed by another successful
conversion. The defenses then dug in
with Ticonderoga’s last possession
turning in the victory.
SARANAC
CENTRAL 48, PLATTSBURGH 7
Saranac Central stacked up five
unanswered touchdowns in the second
half to blow open a 13-7 game at
halftime en route to a 48-7 romp
over the Plattsburgh Hornets. The
win propelled the Chiefs into third
place, past the Gouverneur Wildcats
and securing a first-round trip to
Saranac Lake to play the Red Storm
in the Class C semifinals in two
weeks. Dylan Everleth (7 carries, 72
yards) opened the scoring with a
17-yard run to the house to open a
7-0 lead. Kyle Rascoe added a
37-yard TD run just four minutes
later to log a 13-0 first quarter
lead. Then the Hornets held the
Chiefs scoreless in the second
quarter and were able to shorten the
lead to 13-7 on a James Stiger
touchdown run for 21 yards. Stiger
carried 22 times for 115 yards.
However, the Chiefs broke out in the
third quarter on three quick TD
strikes – a 66 yard scoring pass
from Ben Weightman to Everleth, a
five-yard power rush for Spencer
Jackson and a 10-yard touchdown
catch by Ryan St. Clair – all in
just over four minutes to blow the
game open 35-7. The Chiefs added two
more scores in the fourth quarter.
Jake Mullady was back in action
after an two-week ankle injury and
posted a team-best 121 yards
rushing, including a 61 yard rush to
paydirt to open the fourth quarter.
Rascoe reeled in a 48-yard score
from Weightman to round out the
scoring. Weightman rolled up 190
yards passing, including three
touchdowns in the second quarter.
MORIAH 53,
SETON CATHOLIC 0
The Moriah Vikings took care of
business on Friday night, completing
their unbeaten run to the Class D
title and logging their second
straight shutout over a division
opponent. The Vikings rolled up 301
yards, five rushing touchdowns and
two passing scores in rolling over
winless Seton Catholic 53-0. Moriah
piled up 20 points in each of the
first two quarters, then tacked on
13 more in the third frame. Viking
quarterback Nate Gilbo air-mailed
just two passes all night and both
connected for TD strikes – one a 49-
yard catch-and-run by Ryan
Mascarenas in the first quarter, the
other a 16-yard connection to Tom
Slattery in the second period. The
remaining scores were all rushing
touchdowns: Jalen Beebe with 10
carries for 122 yards and two TD’s
including a 44-yard tote, Slattery
and Nick Gilbo for four-yard scores
and Wally Edwards with a 31-yard
fumble return. Moriah defense held
the Knights to just 20 yards rushing
on 22 carries for the night.
MASSENA
WINS FORFEIT OVER CANTON
The Section X Office confirmed
Wednesday that the Week #7 game,
Canton at Massena, was canceled and
Massena awarded a forfeit, after a
three-player suspension left the
Bears below the required minimum
number of eligible players for the
game. Canton was left with just 15
eligible for the contest. It was the
second forfeit for Canton this
season. The Bears forfeited a win
three weeks earlier due to an
ineligible player. Then at issue was
Canton's eligibility for post-season
play, under Section rules. On
Thursday, Section X declared Canton
also will not participate in the
playoffs, forfeiting its opening
round game to Malone, who will draw
a bye. Canton will still play its
remaining regular season game vs.
O.F.A. by drawing from its JV ranks
to fill out the roster for the
contest.

A steady diet of Ragone and Duquette
fed a Peru offense 26 points in the
second quarter, reversing an early
Huskies’ lead and carrying the
Indians to a 47-21 win in a battle
of 5-1 teams at Crowner Field in
Malone on Saturday. Peru running
back David Ragone ran roughshod
through the Huskies defense for 223
yards on 17 carries, while
quarterback Robert Duquette went
airborne for 182 yards more to lead
the Indian attack. Peru feasted on
three long Ragone touchdown runs –
for 43 yards in the second quarter,
a 61-yard scamper in the third
period and a 72-yard sprint to the
house with 5:01 to go in the game.
Malone led the game 15-7 early in
the second quarter on the strength
of quarterback Jake Gravel’s a
three-yard quarterback sneak and
89-yard punt return just 15 seconds
after Peru got on the scoreboard.
The Huskies other lone score came on
a 31-yard TD strike from Jordan

third quarter, but the Huskies still
trailed 32-21. William Price, who

13 completions on 20 attempts and
netted 182 yards, including eight
passes to Connor Keleher for 115

The Ogdensburg Blue Devils blew open
an early 13-12 lead with 34
unanswered points in the game’s
final 16 minutes to beat Gouverneur
47-12 on Senior Night at O.F.A. The
Wildcats played fiercely for more
than two quarters, but were finally
worn down in the heat of Blue Devil
attack in the second half. As a
result, Ogdensburg swept Class C
play (5-0) for 2009. Marco Carbone
returned the opening kickoff to the
O.F.A. 44 and caught the opening
score 12 plays and six minutes later
on a Darren Fuller rollout pass. The
Blue Devils answered on the next
drive with a score late in the first
quarter when Jarred Morrow found
Eric Barr on a post pattern from 25
yards out to tie the game at 6-6.
After the teams traded fumbles and
possessions in the second quarter,
O.F.A. took the lead for good on a
Morrow four-yard scamper and, with
the converted extra point, led 13-6.
A serious Gouverneur drive late in
the first half stalled outside the
red zone, giving the Devils a
seven-point lead at halftime.
Gouverneur stopped the Blue Devils
in the first drive of the third and
earned great field position on a
Zack Cummings punt return all the
way to the O.F.A. 38. On the first
play from scrimmage, Cummings broke
tackles on an end-around into a 38
yard touchdown. After missing a
two-point try which would have given
the Wildcats the lead, Gouverneur
trailed 13-12 midway through the
third. However, the challenge only
seemed to only motivate the Blue
Devils who went on a quick-strike
tear. Morrow found Barr for two more
scores on pass plays of 30 and 64
yards, then Gene Bouyer blocked a
punt and recovered the ball in the
end zone to increase the lead to
41-12, in less than a quarter’s
time. Barr added one more TD run in
fourth to finish with three catches
for 90 yards. Through the air,
Morrow completed 8- of-15 pass
attempts to notch 239 yards and four
touchdowns, while Connor Ives also
ran the ball nine times for 115
yards. Cummings led Gouverneur with
119 yards on 22 carries.

SARANAC
LAKE 33, GOUVERNEUR 0
Three crucial and untimely Wildcat
mistakes in the middle of the game
turned the momentum sharply in favor
of Saranac Lake. The Red Storm
capitalized by hammering away for 26
unanswered points in the second half
to beat Gouverneur 33-0 on Saturday.
Ryan Farmer’s end-around right-side
run from the Wildcat 20, followed by
Forest Morgan’s extra-point kick
accounted for the only scoring of
the first half. Two possessions
later, the Wildcats countered when
Darren Fuller hit Marco Carbone in
stride along the right sideline with
a 38-yard TD strike, but the play
was called back on a chop block
penalty and the Wildcats ran out of
time to recover before the half.
After the fairly even first half,
the Wildcats held the Red Storm on
their first possession of the third
quarter. But miscues quickly turned
to disaster midway through the
period. A mishandled handoff was
scooped up by Saranac Lake’s Braxton
Tissott inside the Wildcat 25
setting up Saranac Lake's Morgan for
an eight-yard QB keeper for a 13-0
lead with 4:00 remaining in the
third. On Gouverneur’s ensuing
drive, Fuller rushed into the teeth
of the Storm defense and was stood
straight up and stripped of the
ball. Ezra Gillette recovered for
Saranac Lake and quarterback Mike
Phalen subsequently scored on a
10-yard sweep to the right just 1:11
into the fourth frame. After Dalton
DeMarco intercepted a Fuller pass on
the next drive, Morgan fired off a
35-year TD strike to David Snyder
who carried it to the house. Sean
Ryan finished the scoring with 2:56
remaining by muscling to the end
zone on an eight-yard carry. Morgan
went 6-for-9 for 91 yards and two
touchdowns -- one passing and one
rushing. C.J. Stewart captured the
most rushing yards (54) for the
Storm. However, Gouverneur’s Zach
Cummings with the game’s leading
rusher with 15 carries for 93 yards.

WEEK #6 GAME SUMMARIES |
|
OGDENSBURG
47, SARANAC CENTRAL 27
The Ogdensburg Blue Devils captured
the Class C regular-season crown and
top seed with home-field advantage
throughout the playoffs with a 47-27
win over Saranac Central. The Blue
Devils have one remaining divisional
game with Gouverneur next week and a
one-game lead over Saranac Lake, but
own the head-to-head tie breaker
after nipping the Red Storm 7-6 two
weeks ago. The Devils dominated and
scored on their first six
possessions, rolling up a 40-7 lead
just over two minutes into the
second half. Connor Ives carried the
first two touchdowns on runs of four
and 12 yards in the first 8:20.
Jordan Remi snared touchdown strikes
of 14 and 17 yards on both sides of
halftime. Gene Bouyer reeled in a
50-yard touchdown pass from Jared
Morrow, while Eric Barr tacked on a
12-yard run for score to cap a
20-point second quarter. The Chiefs
scored with a minute remaining in
the second quarter when Dylan
Everleth hauled in a 24-yard Ben
Weightman pass. The Chiefs’ QB
dished out some impressive passing
numbers, completing 20-for-24
through the air for 301 yards and
all four touchdowns. Saranac made
the game a bit dicey when they
rolled up three quick touchdowns
early in the fourth quarter against
the Blue Devils’ second line and
closed to within 40-27. After Zach
Vaughn’s 16-yard TD catch, Everleth
snared two bombs for touchdowns of
57 and 58 yards, O.F.A. was forced
to go back to its starters. Ives
added a 19-year run in the final
minute of the contest to seal the
win. Ives finished with nine carries
for 85 yards. Barr added 70 yards on
the ground. Morrow went 7-for-8 with
132 yards passing and 19 yards
rushing. For Saranac, Everleth
finished with eight catches for 193
yards.
MORIAH
20, TICONDEROGA 0
In a battle between the two Class D
state finalists in the past two
seasons, the Moriah Vikings
dominated almost everything: the
clock, the line of scrimmage, the
score and now control their own
destiny. The Vikings claimed the
Class D regular-season title and the
top seed in the Northern Football
Conference playoffs with a
convincing 20-0 victory over the
Ticonderoga Sentinels. The Vikings
racked up an impressive 313 yards
rushing, an average of more than
five yards per carry, forced two
fumbles, dominated the time of
possession for nearly three quarters
of the contest and allowed the
Sentinels no closer than the Viking
49 all night. Moriah was led by
conference-leading rusher Ron
Schofield with 164 yards and two
rushing touchdowns – a 23- yarder in
the first quarter and a seven-yard
scamper with just 0:05 left in the
half. Nick Gilbo added 90 yards on
the ground and the other touchdown
on a four-yard run with 2:24
remaining in the third quarter.
Moriah will draw a first-round bye
in the N.F.C. Class D playoffs and
await the winner of Tupper Lake vs.
Ticonderoga in the semifinals.
PERU 35,
ST. LAWRENCE CENTRAL 14
Peru took command quickly by
exploiting short-field opportunities
and parlaying its chance into four
first-quarter touchdowns to take
down the St. Lawrence Central
Larries 35-14. In a rare scoring
start, the Indians stopped the
Larries on the first possession just
1:13 into the game and the defense
capitalized on a muffed punt attempt
to secure a safety and a 2-0 lead.
In the next seven minutes, the
Indians then reeled off four
touchdowns – a Larries fumble that
Will Price ran seven yards to the
house; two short Rob Duquette
(5-for-9 passing, 61 yards) passes
of five yards to Mike Garrand and a
four-yarder to Connor Keleher; then
an 18-yard run by David Raggone
(seven carries, 62 yards). Raggone
finished the Peru scoring by taking
the opening kick of the second half
and zooming 84 yards to paydirt to
open a 35-0 lead. Camden Durant put
the Larries on the scoreboard on a
two-yard plunge with 4:00 remaining
in the third quarter. On the game’s
final drive, he bore in from the
six-yard line with just 0:02 left.
Durant finished with 68 yards
rushing. Jack Keenan added 60 yards.
Larries QB Rylan Patraw went
5-for-11 for 59 yards passing. Peru
improved to 5-1. With the loss, the
two-game winning streak for the
Larries (2-4) came to an end.
BEEKMANTOWN
45, SETON CATHOLIC 0
The Beekmantown Eagles (6-0) stayed
unbeaten and Seton Catholic remained
winless (0-6) in a 45-0 romp over
the Knights on Saturday. The Eagles
racked up five touchdowns and held
Seton Catholic to just five yards of
offense in the first half. The Manor
twins each collected a touchdown –
Jonathan on an eight-yard pass to
open the scoring at 8:33 and Patrick
with an 11- yard run to open the
second. Matt Durocher also delivered
the mail twice in the first half
with runs of one and seven yards.
Quarterback Carter Frechette (95
all-purpose yards) dished up a 30-
yard TD pass to Luke Weaver to round
out the first-half scoring. Frank
Buksa (eight carries, 60 yards)
plunged for a one-yard touchdown and
Taylor O'Bar added a 10-yard rushing
score in the fourth quarter.

The Potsdam Sandstoners struggled
with Canton for three quarters in a
defensive battle with only a 6-0
lead entering the fourth period, but
the blue-and-orange pounded out 20
points in the final frame to beat
the host Golden Bears 26-0 in a
Class A matchup. Quarterback John
Coleman hooked up with Josh Adams on
a 28-yard TD strike to account for
the only scoring in the first 36
minutes. However, Potsdam’s John
Bradish (13 carries, 66 yards)
slithered into the end zone from the
five-yard line to open the fourth
quarter and a 12-0 lead. Coleman
tacked on another TD run in a QB
keeper from the one-yard line and
Dylan McHenry (10 carries, 38 yards)
dove to paydirt from the two-yard
line to seal the Potsdam victory.
Zac Linsky hauled the ball 27 times
for 137 yards, while Coleman added
68 rushing yards and 28 more on the
pass completion. Canton quarterback
Jeff Hyde went 7-for-17 passing for
96 yards and added 51 yards rushing.

MALONE DEFENSE HOLDS OFF
MASSENA TO WIN "A" DIVISION |
|

Franklin Academy of Malone's Austin Dunlavey (85)
squeezes into the end zone for the two-point
conversion to tie the game 14-14 late in the second
quarter. After Massena connected on a 27-yard
field goal from Taylor Elsner in the third quarter,
Dunlavey capped a six-play, 66-yard drive with a
seven-yard touchdown run which turned out to be the
game's final score. Malone beat Massena 20-17
to capture the Class A regular season title.

MALONE 20,
MASSENA 17
The Malone Huskies captured the
regular-season Class A title, top
seed and home-field advantage in the
Northern Football Conference
playoffs in hanging on to beat the
Red Raiders at Massena 20-17 on
Friday. The Malone victory came
despite the suspension of seven
players, following an incident at
last weekend’s Homecoming Dance. The
Huskies employed backup quarterback
Jordan Cosgrove, the starting
quarterback for the undefeated JV
team last season, and got the
performance they needed. Despite the
steady drizzle, Cosgrove completed
9-of-15 passes for 93 yards,
including an seven-yard game-winning
TD strike to his regular target,
Austin Dunlavey, for a touchdown
just over a minute into the final
quarter. Cosgrove sealed the victory
with a defensive interception in the
end zone to kill Massena’s last hope
for a comeback win with 4.5 seconds
left. Massena got on the scoreboard
first when Evan Raymo broke numerous
tackles on a determined 27-yard
touchdown run at 8:19 of the first
quarter. Both teams came up dry on
their next drive. Malone’s Brad Doe
evened the score at 6-6 with an end
run to the right from the five-yard
line, but the extra point kick was
blocked by Massena’s Devinn Conger.
Massena regained the lead when Evan
Raymo (16 carries, 140 yards) plowed
into the end zone from the four-yard
line, then added the two-point
conversion with just 1:21 left in
the half. But Congrove piloted a
quick one-minute drive that
culminated with Taylor Hilyard’s
three-yard TD run and a two-point
conversion catch by Dunlavey. In the
third quarter, Massena regained the
lead on Taylor Elsner’s 26-yard
field goal at 10:25. The Huskies’
counter punch on the ensuing drive,
ending with Dunlavey’s seven-yard
reception for a touchdown, proved to
be enough for the win with the
Huskies defense holding the Raiders
the rest of the way. The Raiders
lost its third straight game without
a win yet on their new artificial
turf field. It came despite
out-gaining the Huskies in
all-purpose yards 291-229, mostly on
the ground.
PLATTSBURGH
7, AUSABLE VALLEY 3
AuSable Valley’s fifth turnover
finally proved fatal in a
low-scoring 7-3 victory for the
Plattsburgh Hornets on Homecoming
Weekend in Plattsburgh. The Patriots
had defended a 3-0 lead since the
first quarter, but could not put the
game away on quality changes due to
four earlier turnovers. James
Montefusco booted a 31-yard field
goal late in the first quarter that
held up into the fourth stanza.
However, AuSable fumbled the ball
twice, burning out drives inside the
Hornets’ 30 yard-line and had a
68-yard screen play rushing
touchdown called back on a holding
penalty. The pivotal play came in
the fourth quarter when Plattsburgh
defensive back Anthony Bucci swiped
Austin Case’s pass and jetted just
16 yards for the quick Pick Six and
what proved to be the game winner
with just 6:39 still remaining. For
AuSable, Ben Prentiss rushed for a
game-best 65 yards and Case
connected for 53 yards passing.
James Stiger rushed for 40 yards for
Plattsburgh.

6, MASSENA 0
It was a night of pride, honor and
defense for the Massena Red Raiders,
in the rededication of their
refurbished football field in honor
of Raider football coaching legend
Mike Nicholas. Even the Gouverneur
Wildcats’ football family had to
stop and pay homage to a man who
rang up 17 undefeated football
seasons in his coaching career at
Massena. Nicholas returned to the
scene Friday night, in the confines
of a newly-refurbished field
complete with artificial turf and
banks of brighter lights. And both
teams executed the type of defense
and timely stops that any coach
would have relished. However, the
Wildcats spoiled the Raiders’ night
of memories with a lone touchdown on
their first possession of the second
half, then made it hold up for a 6-0
Class A/C matchup. With the soggy
conditions all night, ball
protection became the mantra for the
game. However, it was Marco
Carbone’s 76-yard catch-and-run that
set up the Wildcats at the Massena
3-yard line. Quarterback Darren
Fuller muscled through the Raider
defense to cross the plane of the
goal line at 2:42 into the third
quarter and that was it. Massena’s
best chance to score came in the
second quarter with the Raiders
invading inside the Wildcat 10, but
Nico Devito dove on a fumble that
killed the drive. A field goal
attempt in a subsequent drive was
also missed. Fuller completed 5-of-6
tosses for 84 yards. Zach Cummings
ran for 121 yards on 17 carries.
Carbone reeled in four catches for
88 yards. For Massena, Evan Raymo
led with 11 rushes for 49 yards.

WEEK #5 GAME SUMMARIES |
|
PERU 21,
TICONDEROGA 6
All of the scoring at the Apple Bowl
in Peru occurred in the first half.
Ticonderoga jumped into the lead on
their first possession. On the
game’s fourth play, Bryant Austin
caught a short pitch from
quarterback Robert Kearns and raced
61 yards for the opening score. But
it was all the scoring that the
Indians’ defense would allow. Less
than three minutes later, Peru QB
Rob Duquette launched the first of
three air strikes, hitting Mark
Garrand for a nine-yard touchdown.
Ben Whitney’s extra point kick put
the Indians on top 7-6. Duquette
(16-for-21 passing for 202 yards)
air-mailed two more scoring passes
in the second quarter – one to
Whitney for 30 yards, the other to
Connor Keleher from 15 yards out
with 1:35 to play in the half.
Ticonderoga sought to swing the
momentum back, driving to the
five-yard line with seconds
remaining in the half. However, when
Kearns rolled out on the keeper,
Keleher tackled him just inches from
the endzone at time expired. It was
the last time the Sentinels got into
the Red Zone. For Peru, Keleher
logged a game-best 99 yards. Whitney
added 75 yards. For Ticonderoga,
Austin finished with 159 rushing
yards and two catches for another 16
yards.
MORIAH 41,
TUPPER LAKE 8
The first play from scrimmage set
the tone. Just 17 seconds into the
game, Moriah quarterback Nate Gilbo
shot to the right and sprang free
for 56 yards and a touchdown on the
opening snap to launch a 34-0
first-half barrage en route to a
41-8 victory over Tupper Lake. The
Vikings then grabbed the ensuing
onsides kick and ran it down to the
Tupper 26, rocking the Jacks back on
their heels in the first 30 seconds
of the contest. Ron Schofield
collected a pair of touchdowns and
rushed for 139 yards to carry Moriah
(1-0, 3-2 overall) to a 41-8 triumph
over the Lumberjacks (1-1, 2-3
overall) in a Class D matchup on
Friday. Nick Gilbo and Tom Tesar
also punched the pigskin into the
endzone for the Vikings. Kyle
Baldwin’s two-yard plunge with just
26 seconds left provided the lone
score for Tupper Lake.

Cosgrove in the end zone. Just three
minutes later, the Chiefs tied the
game 7-7 when the offensive line got
enough push for quarterback Ben
Weightman to edge into the endzone.
On the ensuing first down for the
Huskies, the snap sailed over
quarterback Jake Gravel and the
Chiefs’ Ryan St. Clair recovered on
the Huskies 7-yard line, setting up
a second Weightman scamper to
paydirt three plays later. Gravel (NCSN’s
Subway Sub/Player of the Game)
capped the Huskies’ next drive with
a 20-yard laser to Austin Dunlavey
to even the score again at 14-14.
Dylan Everleth the reeled in a
14-yard touchdown pass to make it
20-14, but his extra-point kick
wobbled just wide of the right
upright. Gravel then engineered
another long scoring drive, polished
off with a 29-yard TD strike to
Hilyard. Gravel’s extra-point kick
thrust the Huskies back into the
lead 21-20 at intermission. Despite
a scoreless third quarter, the
Huskies’ defense started to take
control, shutting down the rushing
lanes and thwarting runs to the
outside. In the fourth quarter, Ryan
St. Mary plowed into the end zone on
a one-yard plunge, the Brad Doe
jetted 64 yards to the house to
build a 35-20 lead. Just after the
Huskies called time out to discuss
their extra-point options, the
lightning struck with 6:07
remaining. After a 40-minute wait
and a fourth lightning strike, the
game was called. The Chiefs chose
not to return to play for just six
minutes, allowing the score to stand
as the final. Gravel rushed 12 times
for 132 yards and hooked up for 49
passing yards. Brad Soulia added 107
rushing yards. Weightman threw for
91 yards for the Chiefs.

SETON CATHOLIC 0
Canton’s Austin Weakfall earned his
first win as head coach of the
Golden Bears as his team put forth a
great second-half effort in a 31-0
road win at Seton Catholic. Both
teams battled the elements for most
of the game, committing a combined
seven turnovers. On the first play
from scrimmage in the second
quarter, Canton's Tanner Pratt
busted free from two tackles and
darted into the endzone from
midfield to give the Bears a 6-0
lead. Golden Bear quarterback Jeff
Hyde completed the two-point
conversion to finish off the only
scoring of the half. Late in the
second quarter, the Knights
recovered a fumble at the Canton
36-yard line and drove to the Golden
Bear one-foot line. A halfback pass
by Garrett McLean was completed
inside the one-yard line with five
seconds to play, but the Knights
were unable to properly spike the
ball to stop the clock with no
timeouts remaining and the half
expired. In the second half, Canton
scored 16 points off two Seton
Catholic turnovers. Damien Ashlaw
and Jeff Hyde both scored with
successful two-point conversion to
extend the lead to 24-0 early in the
fourth quarter. Tanner Pratt’s
46-yard scamper set up Ashlaw's
second TD of the game with 2:12
left. Pratt ran the ball 10 times
for 121 yards on the game. On both
sides of the football, Ashlaw made
several key tackles, intercepted a
pass and proved key in the
punt-return game. For Seton
Catholic, Zack Clar ran the ball 20
times for 51 yards. Ethan Quantock
intercepted a pass and recovered a
fumble for the Knights.

After back-to-back losses to Massena
and Malone, the Potsdam Sandstoners
were fired up for a big game and got
it against St. Lawrence Central on
rainy Friday night. The Sandstoners
romped for five first-half
touchdowns and four two-point
conversions. On a sloppy field, five
different Potsdam rushers carried
the pigskin for touchdowns in the
first half and converted on 4-of-5
conversion attempts. John Bradish
who carried 11 times for 92 yards on
the night, opened the scoring with
an eight-yard scamper. Zach Linsky
and Chris Burkett blew the doors off
the Larries’ defense two big-yardage
plays – Linsky with a 69-yard sprint
to the house and Burkett with a
51-yard fumble return that dug a
22-0 hole for the Larries in the
opening quarter. Ryan Lashomb packed
in a two-yard run and John Coleman’s
11-yard quarterback keeper in the
second quarter dashed the Larries’
hopes. Coleman added a nine-yard run
in the third quarter and Shane
McHenry finished the scoring with a
24-yard slash-and-dash TD in the
fourth. Linsky finished with 99
yards on just three carries. Coleman
racked up 94 yards on seven totes.
Bradish contributed 11 carries for
another 92 yards.

BLUE DEVILS' LATE SCORE
TIPS SARANAC LAKE 7-6 IN CLASS C |

With the Blue Devils trailing by six
points in the final minute, Gene Bouyer (7) snatched
the quick slant pass from QB
Jared Morrow and darted through
a sea of Red Storm defenders for
a first down to keep the drive
alive. Moments later, with
his receivers covered, Morrow
dug hard for the end zone from
the four-yard line and hit the
pylon at the right end of the
goalline for the game-tying
score, 6-6, with 0:18 left.

In a game that lived up to all the
hype, the O.F.A. Blue Devils scored
a key Class C victory on the road
with a last-minute touchdown to beat
Saranac Lake 7-6. Both teams were
unable to cash in on first-half
turnovers. After the Blue Devils
were stopped at the Red Storm
30-yard line, backup quarterback
Forrest Morgan – who came on in
relief for the injured Brandon
Patraw in the first quarter – led
Saranac Lake down the field on 10
plays and finished off the drive
with a 17-yard TD strike to Austin
McDonough with 0:34 to play in the
second quarter. However, a missed
extra point proved critical down the
stretch. In the second half, both
offenses moved the ball well, but
stalled deep inside the opponents’
territory numerous times. Saranac
Lake was forced to punt the ball
with just over two minutes to play,
still up 6-0. Jarred Morrow led the
two-minute offense down to the Red
Storm 12, but benefitted from a
penalty for a late hit out of bounds
that pushed the ball to the Red
Storm 6, for a first and goal with
under a minute to play. On fourth-
and-goal from the five-yard line,
Morrow sprinted to his right, then
dove headlong toward the goal line,
stretching out to edge the ball
across the goaline to tie the game
at 6-6 with 0:18 to play. After a
Saranac Lake time out, Gene Bouyer
boomed through the go-ahead
one-point conversion to give
Ogdensburg its first lead of the
game. In the final eleven seconds,
the Blue Devil defense came up with
three straight pass deflections to
end the game. Morrow went 13-for- 24
for 149 yards through the air and
carried the ball 15 times for 84
yards. Bouyer caught two first-down
balls during the game-winning drive
and made four catches overall for 52
yards. Morgan led Saranac Lake with
88 yards on the ground and 8-for-17
passing for 70 yards.

MASSENA
25, POTSDAM 8
The Potsdam Sandstoners scored
first, capitalizing on a Massena
fumble within seven yards of
paydirt, marched 93 yards and led
8-0 after the opening frame, but it
was the only blemish against the
revved-up Red Raider defense for the
rest of the night. After quarterback
John Coleman snuck into the end zone
behind his interior linemen from the
one-yard line, the Raiders
completely shut down further Potsdam
scoring. Senior quarterback Taylor
Elsner delivered a one-yard keeper
of his own in the second quarter to
deadlock the game 8-8 at the half,
then booted a 32- yard field goal
late in the third to establish the
Raiders’ first lead 11-8. But Elsner
quickly piloted the visitors to a
pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns
that sealed an important win within
Class A. On a busted third-and-long
play to start the final quarter,
Elsner aborted a pass attempt,
tucked the ball and made a
determined run to the house. Evan
Raymo secured the win with a
nine-yard TD run with 4:16 to go.
The win could turn out to be pivotal
in achieving a Raider home game in
the opening round of the Class A
playoffs in late October. Massena
linebacker Jimmy Pierce led the
Raider defense with 12 tackles,
while Anto Almasian sacked the
Potsdam QB twice in the final
minutes to help close out Potsdam’s
hopes of a comeback. Elsner had 59
all-purpose yards, while Raymo added
57. Potsdam’s Ryan Mousaw also
wrapped up 12 tackles and a fumble
recovery. |

WEEK #4 GAME SUMMARIES |

GOUVERNEUR
56, PLATTSBURGH 16
With an improved performance under
new head coach Sean Devlin this
year, the Gouverneur Wildcats have
been waiting for a chance to bust
out all over. They did just that on
the road Friday night with a 56-16
runaway over the Plattsburgh
Hornets. Zach Cummings, who carried
11 times for a 189 yards and added a
30-yard pass reception, led the romp
with five touchdown runs, three in
the first quarter alone. Cummings
powered a four-yard run just 4:46
into the game for the first score,
then tacked on runs of 21 and 24
yards within the next 5:50, in
setting up a quick 18-0 lead. Daniel
Maloy (53 yards total) joined the
ground attack with a 12-yard run
just 0:18 into the second quarter
and closed the half with another
six-yard scamper to paydirt. In
between, Cummings gushed through the
middle of the line and sprinted 60
yards to the house. Gouverneur
commanded a 38-0 halftime lead. The
Wildcats continued to run roughshod
over the Hornets to start the second
half. Cummings was delivered an
eight-yard TD run and James Zeller
punched in another score from the
four-yard line to open a 48-0 lead.
Richard Jesmer rounded out the
Wildcats’ relentless 388-yard ground
attack with a six-yard TD run with
0:24 left. The only thorn in the
Cats’ paw was the extra-point
kicking game which went 0-for-7.
Gouverneur was 1-for-2 in two-point
conversions with the only successful
extra points coming after the ninth
and final touchdown. The Wildcats
had three interceptions to aid their
cause. Plattsburgh finally generated
some offense late in the third
quarter leading to a James Stiger
third-quarter score and a Cody
Bushey touchdown plunge from the
one-yard line. Stiger finished with
a team-best 61 yards rushing, while
Bushey added 36.

Update: The St. Lawrence
Central Larries football team got a
different kind of turnover on the
Canton Golden Bears yesterday -- a
turnover for a victory. Section X
officials have ruled that Canton
used an ineligible player in the
game and, in accordance with
regulations, must forfeit the
contest. On the turf, Canton
actually beat the Larries 26-6, but
the game will be reverted to 0-0 and
officially registered as a forfeit.
All player stats will still count,
expect for the ineligible player.
Original Game Report: Canton
quarterback Jeff Hyde fired off two
touchdown passes and scooted for a
22-yard touchdown run to guide the
Golden Bears to their first win in
nearly two years, 26-6 over the St.
Lawrence Central Larries in a Class
A matchup on Saturday. Kyle Nason
led the Bears rushing with seven
carries, 91 yards and a seven-yard
touchdown as Canton jumped out to a
20-6 halftime lead, then employed a
quality defensive effort to shutout
the Larries in the second half. Jack
Keenan topped the Larries’ running
game with 22 carries for 80 yards.

From the opening kickoff, Tupper
Lake dominated Seton Catholic and
took advantage of short fields to
claim a 31-0 win at home over the
Knights. Matt Dechene started the
game with a 55- yard kick off return
to the Seton 25-yard line where,
four plays later, he finished the
opening drive by catching a Zack
Meade pass only a minute and half
into the game. Three plays into the
Knights’ first drive, a bad snap in
shotgun formation resulted in a
Tupper Lake safety and a 10-0 start
for the Lumberjacks. Meade connected
again on the next drive -- this time
to Jacob Klossner for a 37-yard TD
strike. Before the half, Meade again
found Klossner on a 10-yard slant
pss to earn the Jacks a 24-0
halftime lead. After a fumble
recovery, Tupper Lake's leading
rusher Andrew Clark closed off a
32-yard, three-play drive with a
four-yard run with 7:19 to go in the
third. The Seton Catholic defense
improved as the game went on. The
Knights recovered a fumble near
midfield and held Tupper Lake to
just seven points in the second
half, including a scoreless fourth
quarter. Meade threw three TD passes
and went 4 for 8 for 94 yards
through the air. Clark led all
rushers with 15 carries for 58 yards
and a TD.
TICONDEROGA
35, AUSABLE VALLEY 15
Two long touchdown runs by
Ticonderoga quarterback Robert
Kearns in the first 13 minutes of
the game proved to be nearly
back-breaking for the AuSable Valley
Patriots. The Sentinels rolled up
250 yards rushing and another 84
yards through the air in rolling to
a 35-15 win on Friday. Bryant Austin
vaulted into the end zone from the
two-yard line at 5:18 and Kearns
sprinted the right sideline for a
48-yard score at 10:09 to post a
14-0 Sentinels lead. The Patriots
made it a game on a busted play when
Josh Ashline scooped up his own
team’s fumble and wove his way to
the end zone to make it 14-7 with a
minute gone in the second quarter.
But Kearns silenced the Pats’
celebration by taking the ensuring
kickoff 80 yards to paydirt in just
13 seconds. The decisive third
quarter belong to the Patriots who
received a two-yard touchdown run
from Todd Carr and another Bryant
Austin (20 carries, 148 yards) score
on a run from the 24. AuSable’s Ben
Prentiss (team best 72 yards
rushing) notched the only score of
the final quarter on an 11- yard
scamper.
BEEKMANTOWN
40, PERU 13
The Beekmantown Eagles swooped down
on Peru from the opening drive and
never let up. While chewing up 7:22
of clock to grind out an 80-yard
touchdown drive, the Eagles put up
seven points on a Patrick Manor
two-yard TD plunge and the
extra-point kick. Peru had some
initial life, countering with
25-yard touchdown run from David
Raggone (15 carries, 88 yards
total), just three minutes later.
But critical turnovers and a steady
diet of the Manor twins on both
sides of the football led
Beekmantown to a convincing 40-13
win in a crucial matchup between the
Northern Football Conference’s lone
Class B schools. Manor closed out
two Beekmantown drives in the second
quarter with a 14-yard run and a
four-yard run to open up a 20-7 lead
at the break. Matt Durocher gave the
Eagles a commanding 26-7 lead with
an 11-yard scamper to the house at
7:20 of the third quarter, but Peru
mounted a counter insurgency down to
the Eagle 3, before Will Price
pounded the ball into the end zone
to draw the Indians back to within
two scores, 26-13. However, that’s
all the Beekmantown defense would
surrender. Manor and quarterback
Carter Frechette each intercepted
passes, while the defense led by
middle linebacker Jonathan Manor
forced two fumbles. Manor (16
carries, 110 yards) jetted 52-yards
on the opening play of the fourth
quarter to blow the game open at
33-13, before Tyler O'Bar closed out
the scoring with a final touchdown
with just under five minutes to
play. Frechette finished with six
passes for 91 yards. Durocher
wrapped up 71 yards on 12 carries.
Beekmantown improved to 4-0, while
Peru fell to 3-1 in Class B.
MORIAH 34,
MALONE 20
The Malone Huskies suffered their
first loss of the season and the
Moriah Vikings ended two weeks of
frustration after a pair or overtime
losses to Class B schools. Ron
Schofield jetted for four touchdowns
– and the Viking defensive corps
picked off seven Huskies’ passes –
in propelling the Vikings to a 34-20
home win. Both teams traded
first-quarter scores. Schofield
delivered his first touchdown from
the eight yard line, but just over
two minutes later, the Huskies
countered when quarterback Jake
Gravel escaped through the line and
flew 35 yards to the house to knot
the score 6-6. Gravel gave the
Huskies a 12-6 lead with just 2:16
remaining in the half, but the
potential momentum swing just before
the half was shortlived. On the
ensuing kickoff, Schofield hauled in
the ball and sped past the Huskies’
special-teams coverage 90 yards to
tie the game 12-12 just 13 seconds
later. For the Vikings, the game
plan shifted slightly to open the
pivotal third quarter. Nate Gilbo
got the handoff for a two-yard rush
to paydirt and the Vikings restored
the lead 20-12. Schofield finished
the second half with two more TD
runs of 29 and 23 yards. Gravel was
able to muster another five-yard
rushing touchdown early in the
fourth quarter after the Vikings
botched a punt. It brought the
Huskies back within eight points,
but they never touched the end zone
again. At the final horn the Huskies
absorbed their first loss. For
Moriah, Eric Baker snatched four
interceptions. Schofield racked up
155 rushing yards, while Nick Gilbo
added 64. Gravel collected 78
rushing yards and 15 yards passing.

CENTRAL 15, GOUVERNEUR 14
The Saranac Chiefs rebounded from a
14-0 halftime deficit and escaped a
late Wildcat field goal attempt to
defeat the Gouverneur Wildcats 15-14
on Saturday. The Wildcats missed a
35-yard field goal with 50.3 seconds
in the game that left them doomed, a
point short. Gouverneur (1-1, 1-2
overall) swung the momentum late in
the second quarter when Darren
Fuller busted into the end zone on a
quarterback keeper at 10:33, then
targeted wide receiver Marco Carbone
for a 52- yard touchdown reception
just 64 seconds later and only 23
seconds before the half. After a
teammate fumbled taking the ball
from the one-yard line, Jack Mullady
made a key recovery in the end zone
on the Chiefs’ first drive at 3:01
of the second half. The ensuring
two-point conversion, handing again
to Mullady, proved to be a key
choice the Chiefs who then trailed
14-8. After Dylan Everleth muscled
the ball to the house on a two-yard
run just 0:31 into the fourth
quarter, his extra-point kick would
vault the Chiefs into a 15-14 lead
they would not relinquish.
Gouverneur had two chance to regain
the lead, but Kyle Rascoe picked off
a Darren Fuller pass with just over
eight minutes remaining to end the
first threat. Zach Cummings got the
ball back when he picked off Saranac
QB Ben Weightman with 2:50 to play,
but the last-ditch effort to win
ended when the Wildcats could not
connect on the final 35-yard field
goal. Cummings finished with 107
yards rushing on 27 carries. Rascoe

the Chiefs.

The Saranac Lake Red Storm (3-0) win
their third consecutive game in
convincing fashion, 46-12,
dominating the Plattsburgh Hornets
(0-2) in the home opener at Ken
Wilson Field. Saranac Lake scored on
their first four drives to secure
the victory early. The Red Storm
recovered a fumble on the third play
from scrimmage at the Plattsburgh 15
which led to C.J. Stewart's first of
three touchdowns of the afternoon,
three plays later, just under three
minutes into the game. Stewart ran
for another touchdown from 16 yards
out on the next drive. Sean Ryan
dove in for a touchdown from one
yard out. Then a Dalton Demarco
interception led to Ryan Farmer's
eight- yard scamper in the end zone
to build a 29-0 lead. A 38-yard
field goal by Forrest Morgan with
just over a minute to play gave
Saranac Lake a 32-0 lead at the
half. Farmer scored his second TD of
the afternoon on the first play
after intermission as he shook one
tackler and went to the house for 71
yards. Stewart scored his third
touchdown to close the third quarter
on a 15-yard TD run that pushed the
lead to 46-0. The Hornets won the
fourth quarter with two scores as

72-yard drive with a one-yard TD
run. To close the scoring, Joe
Kirkpatrick called his own number

efficient 7-for-10 passing for 96
yards and carried the ball seven
times for 62 yards. Austin McDonough
caught four balls for 67 yards while
Dalton Demarco and Logan Ploof each

MALONE BEATS POTSDAM IN
MAJOR STEP TO WIN CLASS A |
|

Malone’s Taylor Hilyard (26) cuts
back and rockets past the intended
tackle from Potsdam’s A.J. Landi (8)
for a big return on a Sandstoners'
punt. The Huskies won their
third straight Class A divisional
game (3-0), stunning the Sandstoners
33-6 and needing only a win at
Massena on October 9th to claim the
regular season division title.

MALONE 33,
POTSDAM 6
The Huskies proved Saturday that
they are back in contention for a
post-season run and are now the team
to beat in Class A in the Northern
Football Conference. Malone
quarterback Jake Gravel had a hand
in all five Huskies touchdowns,
diving for a one-yard score and
throwing for four more touchdowns in
anchoring a 33-6 win over the
Potsdam Sandstoners. All three
Huskies wins have been against
division opponents in the first
three weeks, with only the Massena
Red Raiders to play in Week 6.
Gravel’s one-yard keeper at 3:32 and
a 30-yard TD strike to Jordan
Cosgrove at 11:36, put the Huskies
ahead 14-0 in the first quarter. The
Green Machine tacked on a
second-quarter score when Gravel
threaded a 12-yard pass to Taylor
Hilyard in the corner of the end
zone for a 20-0 halftime lead.
Austin Dunlavey scored the only
points of the third quarter on a
31-yard catch with 1:12 left on the
clock. Dunlavey reeled in his second
TD catch midway through the final
stanza on a short six-yard catch.
Potsdam’s lone tripto the end zone
came on a 12-yard run from John
Coleman in the game's final 20
seconds. While the Huskies delivered
a strong offensive performance, the
defense held Potsdam’s rushing game
in check. Zac Linsky led the
Sandstoners with 26 carries for 81
yards.

WEEK #3 GAME SUMMARIES |
|
PERU 19,
MORIAH 18 (OT)
The Moriah Vikings are 1-2, but
suffered both losses in overtime on
back-to-back weeks, including a
19-18 comeback thriller to the Peru
Indians on Friday night. The Vikings
led the whole game until the
extra-point kick on the overtime
touchdown to snatch away the win.
Moriah rallied for 12 second-quarter
points on a pair of touchdown runs
from Ron Schofield – a 12-yard run
with 4:10 remaining in the second
frame, then a four-yard scamper in
the dying 1:33 of the half. The
Vikings’ defense held the Indians
off the scoreboard until 2:23 left
in the third quarter when David
Raggone (15 caarries, 75 yards)
plunged into the end zone from the
one-yard line, but Peru’s
extra-point kick was blocked leaving
the Indians down 12-6. Peru evened
the game at 12-12 with 3:55
remaining, when quarterback Rob
Duquette (14-for-21 passing, 175
yards) fired a 46-yard bomb to Ben
Whitney who was brought down at the
Vikings 1, then snapped a pass to
Connor Keleher (six carries, 51
yards) for the touchdown. But kicker
Ben Whitney (four catches, 116
years) shanked the extra-point kick
which could have won the game in
regulation. Moriah missed two
chances to score in the remaining
seconds. In overtime, the Vikings
got on the scoreboard first.
Schofield (28 carries, 108 yards)
generated his third touchdown on a
seven-yard run, but the Vikes
attempt at a two-point passing
conversion failed. After Duquette
scrambled from the 10-yard line to
knot the game 18-18, the game was
back in the hands – or foot – of
Whitney. After waiting through two
timeouts, Whitney made no mistake in
splitting the uprights for the game
winner. For Moriah, Nate Gilbo
rolled 84 all-purpose yards.

TUPPER
LAKE 18, CANTON 13
The Tupper Lake Lumberjacks spoiled
Canton’s comeback bid when Hayden
Lamere snatched a five-yard
touchdown pass from quarterback Zach
Meade with just 1:32 left in the
game to rally the Lumberjacks to
their first win of the season (1-2)
in an 18-13 victory over the Golden
Bears in Canton. The Jacks had built
a 12-0 lead early in the first half,
but Bears quarterback Jeff Hyde ran
a 10-yard touchdown route to the end
zone, then connected with Bill
Shannon on an 11-yard touchdown
completion to take a 13-12 lead at
halftime. But the short-staffed
Lumberjack defense contained the
Bears in the second half in a battle
for turf position, before Lamere’s
final score. Lamere proved to be
Meade’s go-to guy with eight passes
for 85 yards. Hyde delivered
11-of-18 passes for 118 yards for
Canton (0-3).

The Beekmantown Eagles capitalized
on penalties, dropped passes and
missed coverages and eliminated any
Raider scoring to spoil Massena’s
first game on their new lighted
artificial turf field in a 21-0
final. The Eagles got all of the
scoring they needed – and all they
scored – in the first half. The
Eagles (3-0 overall) made themselves
to home on Massena’s new field,
generating a 74- yard drive on the
game’s first possession. Quarterback
Carter Frechette handed the ball to
Matt Durocher at the Massena 13 and
the senior fullback took it to the
house just 3:23 into the game.
Frechette then orchestrated a
69-yard drive, capped by a 25-yard
TD strike to Luke Walker on 4th down
and 20 to close the first frame.
With 1:06 left in the second
quarter, Frechette’s QB keeper
polished off a 12-play drive with a
13-yard scamper to stretch the
Eagles’ advantage. Jordan Deno
converted all three extra-point
kicks to carry Beekmantown to a 21-0
halftime lead. The Raiders dropped
four well-thrown passes from
quarterback Taylor Elsner at key
junctures of the game – including
one in the end zone in the fourth
quarter – that prevented Massena
from cutting into the lead.
Beekmantown’s Patrick Manor carried
12 times for 123 yards and snared
two passes for another 30 yards.
Durocher added 11 rushes for 83
yards. Frechette connected on
7-of-10 passes for 124 yards.
Massena’s Cullen Baines led the
rushing corps with 26 yards on eight
carries.

377 yards – 247 rushing yards, while
quarterback Jared Morrow threw for
nine passes for 130 more – leading
to four first-quarter touchdowns in
a 52-6 romp over the visiting
AuSable Valley Patriots. Conor Ives
had a monster game in the first 15
minutes alone, scoring four
touchdowns on runs of 25, 29, one
and 19 yards. Ives rushed 12 times
for 132 yards to power O.F.A. to a
32-0 lead just 3:06 into the second
frame. In the middle, Gene Bouyer
also reeled in a 26-yard
catch-and-run. Bouyer rolled up 124
yards on 12 carries and produced a
second touchdown on a 40-yard run to
open the second half. Morrow threw
two touchdown passes. Jordan Remi
and Eric Barr also ran for
touchdowns in the third quarter.
O.F.A. also intercepted the ball
three times. The guests managed a
late touchdown with less than four
minutes remaining when Alex
LaFountain crashed into the end zone
from the four- yard line. Ethan
Hipko led the Patriots’ rushing with
31 yards, while Josh Ashley gained
33 yards on two catches.
ST.
LAWRENCE CENTRAL 30, SETON CATHOLIC
6
Dousing the new head coach Bill
Scharf with the water cooler after
the game was symbolic of the St.
Lawrence Central Larries washing
away a 12-game losing streak dating
back almost full two years (October
27, 2007). The Larries rushed for
two first quarter touchdowns, both
within the first 5:42 of the
contest, en route to a 20-6 win over
Seton Catholic in Plattsburgh. Jack
Keenan (13 rushes, 137 yards total)
took the Larries fourth offensive
play and sprinted to the end zone,
then Camden Durant (10 carries, 67
yards) made the Knights pay for a
fumbled snap and muscled to paydirt
from the seven-yard line just three
minutes later to build a 14-0 lead.
Seton Catholic made it a game in the
second quarter, after converting a
fourth down in the red zone and
scoring on a Joe Bridgeman one-yard
plunge to make it 14-6 just 0:48
into the second quarter. But the
Larries marched back on the next
possession and opened a hole for
Martin Fregoe (3 carries, 66 yards)
for a 47-yard breakaway that
restored the margin to 22-6. The
Larries tacked on an insurance score
at 2:21 of the final quarter when
quarterback Rylan Patraw dialed his
own number for a one-yard dive. The
Larries executed one of their best
rushing games in years, piling up
271 yards.
TICONDEROGA
20, WOODSTOCK, VT. 7
After a tight battle early, the
Ticonderoga Sentinels came home from
Woodstock, VT with a 20-7 victory
over the Wasps. The Sentinels
shutdown Woodstock in the second
half, after surrendering a second
quarter touchdown and the lead 7-6.
Bryant Austin opened the scoring for
the Ticonderoga with a one-yard
dive. On Woodstock’s ensuing drive,
the Wasps ticked off 63 yards on 12
plays, culminated by Cameron Styles’
six-yard run. With the extra-point
kick, Woodstock claimed a 7-6 lead.
Austin (21, carries, 153 yards total
rushing) put the Sens back in the
lead with a 35-yard jet to paydirt
midway through the second quarter. A
two-point conversion put Ticonderoga
up 14-7 at the half. After a
scoreless third quarter and a slim
one- possession lead, quarterback
Robert Kearns found daylight to the
end zone from the nine-yard line to
provide an insurance score with 3:27
to go. As a team, Ticonderoga gained
282 rushing yards. Kearns threw five
times for another 66 yards.

SARANAC
LAKE 54, SARANAC CENTRAL 0
The Saranac Lake Red Storm broke
free from a 15-0 halftime lead with
27 unanswered points in the first
9:45 of the third quarter, pouncing
on the Saranac Central Chiefs for a
54-0 rout in a Class C matchup.
After giving up touchdowns on the
Storm’s first two drives of the
game, the Chiefs’ defense held the
line for the balance of the half to
keep the game reasonably close at
15-0 at the half. Austin McDonough
bolted 59 yards to the outside and
delivered the game’s first score at
3:26, then quarterback Brandon
Patraw called his own number on an
eight-yard keeper. The onslaught of
the Storm in the third quarter was
aided by two early turnovers. C.J.
Stewart slammed into the end zone
from the 18-yard line, then returned
to the end zone on a three-yard dash
after the Chiefs fumbled at the
Storm 4-yard line. Following a David
Snyder interception, Red Storm
wideout Logan Ploof distanced
himself from a fallen Chief defender
Matt Terry and hauled in a 25-yard
TD pass from QB Brandon Patraw less
than three minutes later. After
Saranac Lake held the Chiefs to
three-and-out, Austin McDonough
hauled in the punt and galloped 60
yards to the end zone to round out
the third-quarter scoring. Josh
Quinn pounded home a 40-yard score.
Backup quarterback Forest Morgan had
just one carry but a big gainer,
scooping up a fumbled snap and
squeezing through the Chiefs
defensive line 85 yards for another
touchdown, rounding out the scoring.
In all, Saranac Lake rushed 20 times
for 262 yards, while Patraw dealt 11
passes for 133 yards and a
touchdown. David Snyder additionally
caught two passes for 53 yards. The
Chiefs were held to just 12 yards
total rushing on 12 carries, while
Zach Vaughan completed six passes
for just 20 yards.

WEEK #2 GAME SUMMARIES |
|
GOUVERNEUR
33, AUSABLE VALLEY 7
The Gouverneur Wildcats were gifted
with seven Patriot turnovers and
capitalized by scoring twice in the
first half, in defeating host
AuSable Valley 33-13 in the first
divisional matchup in the
newly-expanded Class C. AuSable
fumbled three snaps in the first
half. Gouverneur’s Zach Cummings
delivered the mail from the
five-yard line, then Daniel Maloy
tacked on a 33-yard rushing
touchdown to build a 13-0 lead
through the first quarter. Marco
Carbone snared a 19- yard touchdown
pass from Darren Fuller to carve a
20-0 lead at the half. The Patriots’
lone points came on a 13-yard
quarterback keeper by Austin Case,
initially set up by Josh Ashline’s
75- yard kickoff return to start the
second half. But fumbles continued
to plague the Pats. Cummings raced
38 yards to score on second down to
build a 27-7 third-quarter lead.
Kevin Fuller finished off the Cats
night with an 11-yard TD run with
0:42 remaining. Cummings finished
with 15 carries for 108 yards, while
Maloy provided nine carries for 71
yards to lead the Wildcats who
rolled up 254 yards for the game.
TICONDEROGA 37, SETON CATHOLIC 6
In less than ten minutes, the
Ticonderoga Sentinels racked Seton
Catholic rushers into three fumbles
to set up short-field touchdowns and
piled up a 30-0 lead, en route to a
37-6 win in their fist divisional
game of the season. The Knights lost
three of their fist four possessions
on turnovers and tacked on a botched
punt. For Ticonderoga (1-1), Bryant
Austin dove in from the one-yard
line, then returned a fumble eleven
yards to paydirt to start
first-quarter scoring blitz. Todd
Carr tacked on a two-yard plunge and
quarterback Robert Kearns scampered
10 yards for a touchdown, all within
the first 9:30. Add on two
extra-point kicks and a pair of
two-point conversions and the game
was out of reach early. The
Sentinels, who rolled up 110 yards
in the first half and held the
opposition to just seven yards
gained, only scored one other time
in the second quarter when Jon
Granger rushed 23 yards for a score.
Zack Char (18 carries, 104 yards)
scored the Knights’ lone touchdown
midway through the fourth quarter
with a breakthrough 56- yard dash to
the end zone.

POTSDAM
42, TUPPER LAKE 16
Potsdam took advantage of Tupper
Lake’s inability to consistently
contain the Sandstoners’ rushing
corps and pounded out six touchdowns
and four conversions – all on the
ground – to bring down Tupper Lake
42-16 in a non-divisional game on
Potsdam’s Hall of Fame Saturday.
Potsdam posted 14 points in each of
the first three quarters, while
grinding out 57 rushing plays and
380 yards. After Potsdam halted
Tupper’s first drive, Jesse Bradish
(15 carries, 93 yards) capped a
10-play drive with a two-yard
touchdown. Just over two minutes
later after Bradish intercepted a
Lumberjack pass, John Coleman hit
paydirt from the three-yard line.
Zac Linsky, who led Potsdam with 12
carries for 152 yards, muscled up an
18-yard TD run just seven seconds
into the second frame. Tupper Lake
momentarily stopped the bleeding,
cutting Potsdam’s lead to 20-8, when
Zach Meade scored on a quarterback
keeper from the Potsdam one-yard
line. But the Sandstoners reeled off
the next three scores, capping off
drives with short-yardage
touchdowns. Shane McHenry (14
carries, 88 yards) scored from two
yards and five yards, then Ryan
Lashomb added a two-yard score to
account for the balance of the
scoring before the end of the third
quarter. Hayden LaMere grabbed a
quick three-yard pass from Meade (7
passes, 116 yards) to account for
the Lumberjacks other score. Jake
Klossner handled four kickoff
returns for 109 yards.
BEEKMANTOWN
27, MORIAH 21 (OT)
Beekmantown’s Patrick Manor sprinted
20 yards into the end zone,
delivering the Eagles to a 27- 21
overtime victory over the visiting
Moriah Vikings on Saturday. Moriah
employed shutout defense in the
second half to overcome a 21-7
halftime hole and force extra time.
But the Vikings’ impassioned drive
to complete the comeback win in
regulation met with a fumble inside
the Eagles 20, relegating them to
the mercy of overtime on the road.
In the first overtime, Moriah went
three-and-out. Beekmantown then made
sure there was no second chance.
Manor (16 carries, 74 yards) turned
took the play to the right and into
the end zone for the win. To open
the scoring, Manor rushed 11 yards
for a touchdown, 7-0. In the second
period, Luke Weaver reached over a
defender to snatch a Carter
Frechette pass and, on the
catch-and-run, streaked 51 yards
into the end zone to open a 14-0
advantage. Moriah quarterback Nate
Gilbo (2 passes, 119 yards) cut into
the Viking lead by firing off a
49-yard TD strike to Tom Tesar to
make it 14-7. However, the
celebration was short-lived. Weaver
grabbed the ensuing kickoff and
broke away 70 yards to score. Ron
Schoffield (32 carries, 129 yards)
also hammered home a two-yard
touchdown run for the Vikings. Gilbo
scored the other TD on a two-yard
keeper.
PERU 45,
PLATTSBURGH 0
The Peru Indians overpower the
Plattsburgh Hornets on both sides of
the football in a 45-0 home route on
Saturday. The Indians racked up
three touchdowns in the first
quarter and two more with a field
goal in the second frame, en route
to their second win of the season.
Connor Keleher opened the scoring
with the first of his two touchdowns
for the game, reeling it a 42-yard
pass from Rob Duquette just 2:33
into the contest. Keleher also
scored on a 40-yard interception
runback just 1:18 before the half.
Sandwiched in between were three
scores by Ben Whitney and an
eight-yard TD rush from Duquette
(8-for-11 passing, 155 yards).
Whitney provided a 44-yard
catch-and-run, an 18-yard scoring
sprint and a 26-yard field goal kick
to generate a 38-0 lead at the half.
Peru’s final score came 4:15 into
the third quarter when David Raggone
(11 carries, 60 yards) ran the ball
into the end zone from the Hornets
13. Peru’s defense plucked three
interceptions, including two by
Keleher, and throttled the
Plattsburgh running game into
reverse, holding the Hornets to
negative yardage in the first four
possessions and just 114 total yards
for the game.
WHITNEY

Whitney Point struck early with 14
points on their first two drives of
the game, forcing Ogdensburg to play

The Potsdam Sandstoners ground out a
second-half running attack to down
the Gouverneur Wildcats in the
season opener for both teams. A bad
snap from center led to a fumble
recovery by Potsdam's Josh Adams at
the Wildcat 10-yard line late in the
first quarter. Two plays later,
rusher Zac Linsky ran one in from
five yards away to give the Stoners
6-0 lead. Gouverneur converted a key
fourth-down play in their own zone
on a fake punt run by Zack Cummings,
but the drive and threat ended
shortly after reaching Potsdam's end
of the field. In the third, John
Coleman called his own number from
four yards out to open a 12-0 lead.
Coleman then intercepted a Darrin
Fuller pass on Gouverneur's next
offensive play which subsequently
led to Zac Linsky's second touchdown
of the game late in the third
quarter. On the comeback trail,
Fuller found Dan Malloy for a 12-
yard swing pass and scored the
two-point conversion to make it
20-8. Cory Prashaw recovered an
onside kick and on the next
offensive play, Marco Carbone caught
a 45-yard TD bomb, but it was called
back onan offensive holding call
which ended any chance for the
Wildcats to close the gap.
Linsky carried the ball 32 times for
146 yards to lead Potsdam.

Taylor Hilyard scored a pair of
touchdowns on a 12-yard scamper and
a 52-yard pass-and-run to lead the
resurgent Malone Huskies to a
dominating 46-6 win over the St.
Lawrence Central Larries. Filling in
graduating spots with a solid core
of incoming juniors, the Huskies
looked solid on Saturday launching
their 2009 campaign by capitalizing
on a muffed punt snap on the
Larries’ first offensive series.
Austin Dunlavey dove on the ball in
the end zone to put the first six
points of the game on the board for
Malone. After Hilyard’s two scores,
quarterback Jake Gravel added two
touchdown runs and racked up 103
ground yards. Darren Fullum added a
33-yard touchdown run to cap the
Huskies’ scoring. The Larries’ lone
score came on a 14-play drive early
in the fourth quarter, culminating
in a two-yard dive by Camden Durant.

OTHER GAMES IN WEEK #1 |
|
OGDENSBURG
33, MASSENA 7
A blitzing 20-point second quarter
dominated by big-yardage plays in
the final 7:23 of the period,
carried the Ogdensburg Blue Devils
to a 33-7 opening night win over the
Massena Red Raiders. O.F.A. put up
seven points on their first drive of
the game and Brandon Staie snapped
up a fumble recovery to highlight
the first quarter for the Devils.
Jared Morrow (eight carries for 147
yards) scrambled to find Gene Bouyer
who caught, spun and jetted 25 yards
for the touchdown and a 14-0 lead.
Conor Ives also ran touchdown
sprints of 23 and 42 yards, while
Eric Barr returned a punt for 60
yards and a TD strike. Meanwhile,
the Red Zone was unfriendly to the
Red Raiders who were thwarted from
scoring four times inside the O.F.A.
20-yard line in the first half. The
Raiders’ lone score also came in the
second quarter, after David Peets
scooped up a fumble and on the next
play Cullen Baines carried the ball
nine yards to paydirt. Raiders
halfback Even Raymo contributed 15
carries for 88 yards. The Devils
only points after intermission came
in the first possession. Morrow
raced through the line on an option
keeper and went 50 yards full
throttle to the end zone.
SARANAC
CENTRAL 19, CANTON 13
After struggling to find consistent
offense and scoring for the first 22
minutes, both the Chiefs and Golden
Bears posted scores in the final two
minutes of the first half to enter
intermission tied 7-7. The game was
the debut for Canton’s new head
coach Austin Wakefall who threw in a
few new wrinkles that kept the Bears
close. Jack Mullady, who led the
Chiefs with 18 carries and 111
yards, put Saranac on the board
first with exactly 2:00 remaining in
the half when he scrambled six yards
to the end zone. Canton countered
with 0:07 left in the half when
quarterback Jeff Hyde (124 passing
yards) hooked up completed one of
his eleven passes on the day, a
12-yard strike to Johnathan Kingsley
to knot the game 7-7 at the half.
Saranac regained the lead on a long
opening drive to start the second
half on 16 plays for 71 yards and a
16-yard touchdown by Dylan Everleth.
After the Chiefs ate up 7:40 on the
opening drive, Canton responded with
a long drive of their own, elapsing
into the fourth quarter. The 11-play
campaign ended with a 26-yard
completion to Kyle Nason that tied
the score at 13-13. Dylan Everleth
delivered the game- winning
touchdown on a 30-yard run with just
3:40 remaining for the 19-13
victory. Everleth finished the day
with 14 carries for 80 yards.
BEEKMANTOWN
44, TICONDEROGA 12
Beekmantown quarterback Carter
Frechette fired off three touchdown
passes and scrambled for another as
the Eagles rolled to a 44-12 rout of
Ticonderoga on Friday. Beekmantown
scored on its first seven drives of
the game. In addition, Eagles
rushers racked up 284 ground yards,
averaging just under nine yards per
carry. Patrick Manor rushed nine
times for 127 yards and hauled in a
screen pass for a 50-yard touchdown.
Quarterback Carter Frechette, who
was highly touted for his playmaking
skills as a freshman last season,
quickly demonstrated on the first
drive of the season when he
delivered a 51-yard play-action TD
pass to Luke Weaver, then flung a
bullet to Evan Bull in the corner of
the end zone on the second
possession of the game. Both
completions came in the first 4:32
of the game. After Ticonderoga’s
third straight turnover, Frechette
called his own number, scrambling
four yards into the end zone for a
quick 19-0 lead. Ticonderoga, a New
York State finalist two years ago,
is undergoing a huge makeover this
year after graduating 23 seniors
last year and having just nine
returning personnel this season. The
Sentinels suffered fumbles on their
second and third possessions, and
struggled to contain the Eagles’
running game. The teams traded
scores in the second quarter,
including a 36-yard quarterback
keeper for Ticonderoga. Bryant
Austin also scored for the Sentinels
to make it 25-12 midway through the
second quarter. Then Eagles fullback
Matt Durocher (84 yards) put the
game out of reach with back-to-back
rushing touchdowns of five and 14
yards.
MORIAH 20,
BELLOWS VT. 0 (non-league)
The Moriah Vikings, a New York State
Class D finalist last year, opened
its 2009 campaign with a solid
defensive effort and a 20-0 victory
over Bellows Free Academy from
Vermont, in a non- league game on
Friday night. The Vikes scored on
each of their first three
possessions, once in the first
quarter and twice in the second
frame, for the entire scoring. Nate
Gilbo’s nine-yard dash put Moriah on
the scoreboard. Gilbo then fired off
a 15-yard TD strike to Tom Tesar,
followed by an 11-yard rushing
touchdown for Ron Schofield who led
Moriah with 20 carries for 131
yards. Gilbo also rushed 10 times
for 61 yards. Ryan Mascarenas hit on
two of three extra-point attempts to
round out the scoring. The Vikings
held Bellows to just 22 carries for
48 total yards as a team.
