ICEMEN HANG ON FOR KEY DIVISION II VICTORY OVER SALMON RIVER 6-5

By Bob LaRue, North Country SportsNet
The Norwood-Norfolk Icemen emerged from a classic seesaw battle with Salmon River with a 6-5 victory on Tuesday, grabbing a key Division II victory over the Shamrocks. The Icemen, 3-0-1 overall, climbed to 2-0 in the division, the last unbeaten. NNCS had not beaten Salmon River since the 1998 Section X final when Les Haggett was the Division II MVP. The game was played on February 26, 1998 at Cheel Arena. The Flyers/Icemen had lost the last 20 games in a row to the Shamrocks. In a sudden first-period flurry, Billy Jackson ripped the game’s first goal on a pass from N-N team captain Blake Barkley at 9:03 of the first period. Salmon River responded just 54 seconds later when Marc Plante scored on a setup from Chris Lewis. But the undaunted Flyers immediately struck back when Barkley connected from Jackson to restore the Icemen’s lead just 18 seconds later. The tradeoff continued into the second period. Stevie Adams slammed home a shot at 3:50 to gain another tie for the Shamrocks, only to have the Icemen regain the lead three minutes later on a Jordan Fisher goal from Jake Ladouceur. Salmon River knotted the game 3-3 on a Kyle Roundpoint goal a minute later. Tyler Murray delivered N-N’s fourth go-ahead goal at 10::22. Salmon’s Bo Adams closed the second period scoring to knot the game 4-4. Salmon River grabbed its first lead of the game at 4:10 of the third period when Tehawerahkwatha Herne powered home the goal for a 5-4 advantage. However, the rest of the night belonged to the Icemen who slammed goals just two minutes apart. Fisher raced up the left wing and wired Matt Fiacco who tipped the puck home. Ladouceur then tucked home a rebound off the Rocks’ goalie Sonny Lightning for the game winner at 6:58. Icemen goalie Mike Burnett made numerous key saves, snagging 24 shots. Lightning turned aside 23 shots.
