LARRIES HANG TOUGH,
BUT BOW IN 2ND HALF OF STATE
QUARTERFINAL |
|

Jamesville-Dewitt’s Eric De John (8)
fires a blistering shot past St.
Lawrence Central’s Charlie Dullea
(9). De John scored five of the Rams
nine goals. The Larries hung
tough again, this time with a
powerful Jamesville-Dewitt team,
down 3-2 after the first quarter and
4-2 at halftime. However, key
penalties and a nearly impenetrable
Rams' defense in the second half
allowed Jamesville-Dewitt to pull
away with a 9-3 victory in the N.Y.

finished a memorable season at 18-5.
Mac Keehfus also scored two goals
and an assist for J-D (19-3).

McCUIN & HELMER LEAD
LARRIES TO FIRST-EVER STATE PLAYOFF WIN
8-7 |

St. Lawrence Central’s Brady Helmer
celebrates after slamming home the
game-winning goal with 53.5 seconds
remaining, breaking a 7-7 tie, to
beat heavily-favored Chenango Forks
in the opening round of the New York
State Class C Lacrosse Playoffs. It
marked the first win ever state
playoff win for the Larries.

St. Lawrence Central attacker Brady
Helmer scraped up a loose ball,
raced through the middle of the
field and spotted linemate Cody
Kilcoyne to the right. But when the
defender chose not to slide across
and pick him up, Helmer kept the
stick high, shot high and buried the
ball into the upper corner of the
mesh with 0:53.5 remaining. The win
upset the #15-ranked Blue Devils who
were also riding high after beating
Corning East who had been the
Section IV champions for 24
consecutive years. Larries’ goalie
Connor McCuin made 27 saves with the
aid of a tightly-packed defense
which kept St. Lawrence within a
goal all game long. Chenango Forks
led 3-2 through the first quarter,
but the Larries won the second frame
1-0 for a 3-3 deadlock at
intermission. The Larries kept
fighting back from a goal down
virtually the entire game until they
threaded back-to-back markers from
Camden Durant and Kevin Logan early
in the fourth quarter to take their
first lead since the opening goal at
7-6. Matt Pratt ripped the tying
goal from J.T. Felter with 2:10 to
play to set the stage for the
dramatic finish. For the Larries
(18-10 overall), Jack Keenan led the
way with a hat trick and an assist.
Helmer and Logan contributed two
goals and two assists each. Chenango
Forks (20-6 overall) was led by John
DeOrdio’s two goals and Tom Markham
with a goal and an assist. The
Larries advance to face
Jamesville-DeWitt in the New York
State quarterfinal at Cicero-North
Syracuse High School on Tuesday at
8:00 p.m.

The unbeaten season for the Salmon
River Shamrocks and the final season
for Coach Dave White came to an
abrupt halt in the first quarter of
the New York State Class C
quarterfinal round at Cicero-North
Syracuse. The Lancers jumped all
over previously-unbeaten Salmon
River 11-0 in the first quarter and
cruised to a 21-9 win.
Lafayette led 13-0 before the
Shamrocks were able to stem the
bleeding with a goal. From that
point on, Salmon actually outscored
the Lancers 9-8. Former Shamrock
Lyle Thompson, now playing for
Lafayette, scored seven goals and
dished out five assists, while
brother Miles Thompson netted a hat
trick and two assists. Jeremy
Beresovoy also scored five goals.
Ty Thompson led Salmon River with
three goals. Shane Francis and
Seth Oakes both scored a pair.
Hank Delisle scored a goal and
handed out five helpers, while Trent
Jacobs collected a goal and an
assist for the Shamrocks who
finished the season at 18-1.

Seton Catholic’s Jesse Wood (22)
dives and fires a shot past three
Salmon River defenders, but the
attempt was blocked by the goalie
Jake Lazore. The Shamrocks
pulled away from a 13-10 lead with
five straight goals to finish in
capturing the opening round the N.Y.

The Salmon River Shamrocks outshot
Seton Catholic 51-33 and fended off
a fourth-quarter Saints surge to win
the opening round of the New York
State Class B playoffs 18-10 and
stay undefeated on the season at
18-0. But their next challenge will
likely be their toughest – in more
than one sense. The #6 state-ranked
Shamrocks advance to play also
undefeated #2-ranked LaFayette, also
sporting an undefeated 21-0 win-loss
record and two of their former
players, Miles and Lyle Thompson who
transferred there prior to the
lacrosse season. In the opening
round win, the Shamrocks broke a 2-2
tie with three straight goals to
close the first period. Section X
regular-season scoring leader Ty
Thompson delivered three goals and
one assist, but was hounded
virtually the entire game. That fact
created openings for linemate Seth
Oakes who dialed up five scores
before intermission, rang two off
the goalpost and still finished with
a game- best seven goals and four
assists overall. Salmon River pulled
out to a 9-5 lead at halftime, but
Seton Catholic forged two goals in
the first two minutes of the second
half to draw within two, behind the
sharp goaltending of senior Mike
Washington who is bound for Navy in
the fall. Salmon River bounced back
quickly with consecutive goals from
Oakes, Shane Francis, Derek Hopps
and Hank Delile to blow the game
open at 13-7 in the middle of the
third. But then the Shamrocks’ one
Achilles heel seemingly all season –
penalties at seemingly inopportune
times of the game – reared up late
in the third period with two
unreleasable overlapping
infractions. Seton Catholic took
advantage with man-up goals from
Joey Slavik, Jesse Wood and Michael
O’Brien to shave the lead to 13-10,
all in less than a minute. But
Salmon River owned the fourth
quarter. Trent Jacobs and Shane
Francis immediately scored, then
Oakes set up markers for Hopps and
Thompson while netting a score of
his own. Francis finished with three
goals and two assists, while Hopps
added a two goals and an assist.

St. Lawrence Central attacker Cody
Kilcoyne fires off a point-blank
shot that is deflected by Massena
goalie Jake Martin. The
Larries broke away from a 2-1 lead
with seven straight scores in the
first half, catapulting them to a
20-8 win over the Red Raiders in the
Section X Class B championship.

A tangled battle ensues at midfield
with the ball down. Six
Larries netted goals. Kevin Logan
jammed in five markers, Jack Keenan
scored four, while Kyle Shampine,
Dylan Patterson and Brady Helmer
each logged a goal for St. Lawrence
Central (16-3 overall). Massena,
which ended its season at 10-8, got
four goals from Taylor Smoke, two
from David Henrie and single markers
from Zach Prashaw and Taylor Elsner.
Prashaw’s goal in the first quarter
brought the Raiders to within a goal
at 2-1, before the Larries opened up
the barrage.

SARANAC LAKE 11-9 IN CLASS B SEMIFINALS |

Massena’s John Paul Prashaw
(4) and Saranac Lake’s Jon Barge
(33) scramble after the loose ground
ball. Massena grabbed control of the
seesaw battle in the second quarter
with four straight goals, emerging
from a 4-2 deficit, en route to an
11-9 win the in Section X Class B
semifinals. The attack tandem
of David Henrie and Taylor Elsner
each netted four goals and dished
out two assists as the second-seeded
Red Raiders advanced to the Class B

SHAMROCKS BLITZ FOR 10
OPENING GOALS IN "C" TITLE VS. POTSDAM |
|

Salmon River goaltender Trey Adams
(44) traces the path of an
attacker's stick to turn aside a
close-range Potsdam shot. Key
stops in a close first-half left
Potsdam falling behind while Ty
Thompson scored four times and
offered two helpers and Hank Delisle
generated three goals and three
assists to lead Salmon River (15-0
overall) to a 15-5 win in the
Section X Class C championship.

Potsdam's Peter Tardelli (22) ducks
under a Salmon River defender to
attack the Shamrock goal.
Salmon River opened the game with a
10-0 run, while stellar goaltending
kept the Sandstoners frustrated
early. Potsdam tried to forge a
third-quarter comeback with two
unanswered goals, but tough Shamrock
defense kept the Sandstoners from
any consistency in getting to the
interior. Shawn Lillie had the best
success against the Rocks with three
goals for Potsdam who finished the
season at 14-5 overall. Salmon River
plays St. Lawrence Central for the
overall Section X championship.

POTSDAM SURGES FROM

Canton’s Tanner Pratt (1) protects
the ball from the Potsdam defender
Ryan Mousaw (25) near the
Sandstoners net. The
upset-minded third-seeded Golden
Bears emerged from a 7-4 halftime
deficit and rattled off six straight
goals to jump into the lead in the
third quarter against the #2-seeded
Sandstoners. But Potsdam outscored
the Bears 8-1 the rest of the way to
capture the win in the Section X
Class C semifinals and advance to
play Salmon River for the title on
Friday at SUNY Canton. (Eric
