MASSENA GIRLS BEATEN IN STATE SOCCER QUARTERFINAL


Through the heavy rain, Massena goalie Ashley Hann tries to prevent a header attempt by a striker from Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake.  Hann collected eight saves between the pipes for the Raiders. Massena relinquished four first-half goals, including three to the Spartans' Monica Wolf, in dropping a 4-1 decision in the New York State Class A quarterfinals.  The Spartans quickly attacked the Red Raiders with speed and quality shooting, then bottled up Massena’s offense. The Raiders scored the only goal of the second half when Coree Phillips netted for an unassisted marker. LACLAIR, ROMEO HAT TRICKS LEAD MASSENA TO "A" TITLE


Massena's Dominque Valencius (8) jets around Malone's Laura Pelkey to deliver the ball to the front line.  The Raiders' Nyssa LaClair had three goals and two assists Taylor Romeo added a hat trick and Kristen Poller tallied two goals and three assists as the Red Raiders walloped Malone 8-3 in the Section X

Canton's Jen Lomaki (6) races along the right sideline and drives the ball inside the Potsdam 18-yard box for a chance on net.  Canton’s Murphy Newman got the #2-seeded Bears on the scoreboard at just 2:02 after the opening tipoff with an unassisted goal. But Potsdam controlled most of the next four minutes and countered when Allie Fayette redirected a Cassie Grace cornerkick into the back of the net to even up the score 1-1. Curry’s goal propelled the top-seeded Sandstoners to a repeat championship and into next Tuesday’s state playoff opener at Massena Central. Potsdam goalie Monique Cornett made seven saves while Canton’s Kara Locey stopped 10.
 

NEWMAN GOAL LIFTS CANTON TO 1-0 WIN VS. SHAMROCKS


Canton's Murphy Newman (2) gets a head on the ball for a shot on the Salmon River net.  Newman scored the Golden Bears' lone goal off a cross from a corner kick in the 65th minute to beat Salmon River 1-0 in the Section X Class B semifinals at the new Massena Central turf field.  The Bears advance to play Potsdam in the final after the two teams split their regular season games. GOUVERNEUR'S ROBERTS NETS GAME-WINNER VS. O.F.A.

Lindsay Munger fed the assist on the game’s only goal. Gouverneur goalie Crystal Tulley knocked down 17 shots to preserve the shutout win. The Blue Devils finished the season at 3-12-2 overall. Gouverneur (4-13) advances to play top-seeded Potsdam in the Class B semifinals.

B-M PANTHERS, N-N FLYERS SHARE TITLE; B-M ADVANCES


Norwood-Norfolk’s Alexis Sweet (11) gets rid of the ball past the sliding tackle of Brushton-Moira’s Kelsey Manchester (31).  After a scoreless regulation, the teams tied 1-1 in four overtimes and were declared co-champions.  the Panthers advanced to state playoffs winning a shootout 2-0.

Brushton-Moira’s Taylor Keck (21) celebrates her penalty kick that clinched the win for the Panthers over Norwood-Norfolk. Kelsey Manchester scored for Brushton-Moira in the first overtime, then Tayler Chudzinski lofted a shot that caught the upper right corner of the net for a 1-1 draw.  But the Panthers moved on to the state playoffs by winning the shootout 2-0.

Madrid-Waddington's Jena Cryderman ((4) tries to run the corner and get to the net.  The #4 Flyers escaped a Madrid-Waddington penalty kick after their goaltender was yellow-carded in the midst of diving for the ball in a scrum in front of the net and had to be temporarily replaced for the shot.  Jessica Harvey became the temporary goaltender.  But the penalty shot rang off the goalpost with 12 minutes left in the game for a 1-0 win in the Section X Class C semifinals.  Alex Martin made nine saves for the Jackets, while Brynn Tebo corralled three shots for the Flyers.

B-M’s lone goal started off a corner kick from Meghan Follette for the clincher. The Panthers improved to 8-7 overall and advance to play Norwood-Norfolk for the Class C championship. Tupper Lake closed the season at 7-8-2 overall.

HARRISVILLE RETURNS TO "D" FINAL BEATING HEUVELTON

Harrisville's Emily Lesperance (14) battles Heuvelton's Lindsay Tennant (18) for control in the middle of the field.  The win elevated Harrisville’s record to 15-0-2 overall. They will battle Chateaugay in a rematch of last year’s Class D title game for this year’s championship. Sanna Jaquith collected six saves for Heuvelton who finished the season at 11-5-2 overall.
 

ST. REGIS FALLS ADVANCES NIPPING CLIFTON-FINE 1-0


As the players tangle, Clifton-Fine’s Ella Donovan (1) falls to the turf while St. Regis Falls’ Sarah Meacham (17) continues after the loose ball.  Krista Lucus fed Morgan Bishop who ripped the lone goal in the 11th minute of play, then #4-seeded St. Regis Falls fended off 5th-seeded Clifton-Fine in a 1-0 victory in the girls’ Section X Class D quarterfinals at Potsdam.

Saints’ goaltender Aleesha LaBounty turned aside six shots for the shutout. The Eagles’ season ended at 9-5-4 overall, while the Saints improved to 9-5-2 and earned a return visit to the semifinals against top-seeded Chateaugay next Thursday.
 

CHATEAUGAY WALLOPS E-K COUGARS IN QUARTERFINAL


Chateaugay’s Nikki Cooke-Paige (17) speed dribles her way into the box and past an Edwards-Knox defender.  Marissa Cook connected on both goals to power the top-seeded Chateaugay Bulldogs past the #9-seeded Edwards-Knox Cougars 7-0 in the Section Class D quarterfinals at Potsdam High School. The Bulldogs (15-1) continues to the semifinal round to face #4-seeded St. Regis Falls next Thursday at Potsdam. The Cougars wrapped up their 2009 campaign with

The Colts battled toe-to-toe with the Panthers through nearly 89 minutes, only to relinquish the tie-breaking score in the final 65 seconds. The Colts’ season ends at 0-13-2 overall, while the Panthers advance to the Class D quarterfinals against #2 Harrisville on Friday at SUNY Canton.
 

HERMON-DEKALB ELIMINATES MORRISTOWN IN OPENER 7-2


Hermon-DeKalb’s Rochelle Whitton (3) reaches back for the ball in a battle with Morristown’s Morgan LaBarge (9). CLIFTON-FINE ADVANCES IN BEATING HAMMOND 4-1

The Clifton-Fine Eagles advanced to the second round of the Section X Class D playoffs with a 4- 1 win over the Hammond Red Devils. The #5 seeded Eagles were led by Emily Lachut’s two goals and an assist. Katherin Donovan and Nichole Brown also chipped in goals for the Eagles who improved to 9-4-4 overall. For #12 seeded Hammond, the season came to an end at 1-14 overall.
 

CHAZY ENDS CHATEAUGAY RUN IN STATE PLAYOFFS IN 5-2 WIN

COOKE-PAIGE GOALS LIFT CHATEAUGAY TO "D" TITLE 2-1

Harrisville's Jeri Baker (5) controls the ball while shielding it away from Chateaugay's Alexis Beach (2). Chateaugay jumped to a quick 1-0 lead when Cooke-Paige broke into the open at the top of the 18-yard box, gathered a pass from Kelly Favr and lasered a shot to the lower right corner of the net in the game’s 7th minute. Harrisville tied the game when Bulldog goalie Amanda Wilcox juggled the initial save. Emily Lesperance chipped the loose ball to Mary LaPlatney who chested the ball into the net to tie the game 1-1. Cooke-Paige’s second score secured the Chateaugay championship victory. With the win, Chateaugay avenged a 1-0 loss to Harrisville in the title game last year. The Bulldogs will draw a first-round bye in the New York State regional playoffs. They will play in the state quarterfinal next weekend.
 

TOP SEED CHATEAUGAY ROLLS BY ST. REGIS FALLS 4-0 IN SEMI
