MASSENA SHUT OUT BY SOUTH GLENS FALLS IN QUARTERFINAL

Massena shortstop Melissa Manley slaps on the tag but a bit late to get South Glens Falls' Alexa Toole sliding in at second base during the New York State Class A quarterfinal at SUNY Potsdam.  SGF pitcher Maddy Wheeler tossed a three-hit shutout in dealing the Red Raiders a 5-0 setback as the last remaining Section X team bowed, ending the 2009-2010 sports season.  (Caswell photo)   Game Gallery   NCSN Broadcast

The Massena Red Raiders were held to just three hits -- a double by Kara Holmes and singles by Melissa Manley and Sierra Streeter.  Streeter pitched five shutout innings, but a moment of Raider indecision and a bad throw to home plate allowed the Bulldogs to plate the only run they would need in the third inning.  SGF scored two runs in the third and three more in the fourth inning on four singles.  Erin Malcahy led  the Bulldogs with three hits.

GERMANTOWN BOUNCES BACK TO TURN BACK HEUVELTON

Heuvelton's Sarah Sloan (21) dives headfirst ahead of the tag at second base by Germantown shortstop Lauren Fox.  Sloan led Heuvelton with three hits, including two doubles and two RBI's.  After the Bulldogs pulled out to a 3-0 lead in the third, the Clippers rallied for three runs in the third and plated 10 more runs over the next three innings in eliminating the Bulldogs in a 13-5 win in the State Class D regional semifinal.  (Adam LaQuier photo)   Game Gallery   NCSN Broadcast

After Germantown broke a 5-5 deadlock with three runs in the fifth inning, Heuvelton was unable to mount any serious offense in the sixth before Germantown piled up five insurance runs in the bottom of the inning. The Bulldogs went quietly in the seventh to finish their season with their first Class D loss.

After 20 consecutive shutouts, Kacie Wentworth finally gave up a run in the top of the 4th inning, but the Bears immediately rallied back with two runs in the bottom of the frame on consecutive RBI singles from Sam Corbett and MacKenzie Lennox.   But with two down, no runners and Mechanicville within a strike (1-2 pitch) of seeing its two-year state championship on the line, the Wentworth could not get the final out on Allison Ford who worked a walk.  Three batters later, Mechanicville had taken the lead.  The Bears finished a stellar season with a 21-1 mark.

TICONDEROGA TURNS BACK
ST. LAWRENCE 9-2 IN STATES

Ticonderoga pinch runner Autumn Olcott (10) slides into third to beat the throw coming from catcher Danielle Smith (10).  Olcott stole two bases and started a two-run rally that launched  three-run rally for the Sentinels who went on to beat St. Lawrence Central 9-2 in State Class C regionals.

St. Lawrence Central's Ashley Thayer struck out six, but did not survived the fifth inning.   Thayer threw two perfect innings to start  the game, but finally the Sentinels began to make contact.  In a repeat of last year’s regional game, the Sentinels’ Katie Karkoski avenged last year's 7-0 loss to the Larries by fanning six batters and allowing just four hits, despite issuing six walks.

ANOTHER CANTON SHUTOUT FOR SECTION X CLASS B TITLE

Salmon River shortstop Amber Debyea slaps down the tag, but Canton leadoff runner Samantha Brown (1) is safe at second base.  Canton pitcher Kacie Wentworth polished off a season-long unprecedented 20-game shutout streak within Section X, while leading the Golden Bears to the Section X Class B title.  Canton scored three runs in the third and five more in the fifth in an 8-0 win over the Salmon River Shamrocks.

Salmon River tried to bunt its way back into the game and break the scoreless streak against Wentworth, but was still unable to manufacture a run against a solid Bears' defense.  The Bears tallied three runs in the third inning on back-to-back RBI singles by Natasha Bell, Wentworth and Samantha Corbett. They took command by plating five runs in the fifth inning on two-run Wentworth single up the middle and Mackenzie Lennox’s base knock. Corbett, Samantha Brown and Emma Rexford all had two hits. Salmon River had five hits, including two bunt singles.

CANTON BLANKS OGDENSBURG TO RETURN TO CLASS B FINAL

Canton’s third baseman Micki Lennox (17) battled the sun but couldn’t make the catch in foul territory in front of Ogdensburg Coach Storm Cilley.  Canton pitcher Kacie Wentworth racked up here 19th shutout of the season, allowed just one walk and fanned 13 Blue Devils in powering the top-seeded Golden Bears to a 6-0 victory over fourth-seeded Ogdensburg in the Section X Class B semifinals.   The goose-egg continues to build on her own Section X shutout record, while still five shy of the all-time single-season state record owned by Section IV’s Emily Ling of Chenango Valley in 2001. Wentworth allowed just two hits – both to O.F.A.’s MacKenzie Cole – while swatting three hits to aid her own cause.  (Eric Foote photo)  Game Gallery

Canton’s Natasha Bell slides into third safely as the ball was thrown into leftfield, then Bell would come around to score.  A four-run rally in the fourth inning keyed the Bears’ scoring. Call- up Emily Rexford delivered three hits in three trips in her first-ever varsity game, while Sam Brown also smacked two hits.
