By Bob LaRue, North Country SportsNet
Ashley Marshall threw a complete game two-hitter in delivering Malone to a 2-0 victory over Oneida in the New York State Class A quarterfinals and leaving the Huskies as the lone Section X team still standing in the State Final Four. Marshall struck out 10 and set down the final nine batters in a row to ace the win. After a scoreless deadlock through five innings, Franklin Academy finally broke through in the sixth when Brittany Marshall scored, taking advantage of two Oneida throwing errors. The Huskies, who will enter the State Final Four for the first time in 13 years, will play Section VIII champion Floral Park on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Waterloo High School. The state softball playoff games and updates can be heard live on North Country SportsNet.

Germantown pitcher Carissa Phillips held Heuvelton to just five hits and the Clippers lumped all of their scoring into just two innings in beating the Bulldogs 8-5 in the New York State Class D quarterfinals. After a pitcher’s duel in the first two innings, Heuvelton broke out on top 2-0 when Heather Johnson doubled off the left-centerfield fence, then scampered home on an infield error in the third inning. But the Bulldogs’ lead was short-lived when Germantown touched the plate four times in the bottom of the frame, courtesy of a passed ball, a two RBI single by Courtney Parlman and an RBI base-hit from Clippers’ pitcher Carissa Phillips. Germantown rapped Heuvelton pitcher Heather Johnson for four more runs in the next frame when Lauren Fix doubled, came home on a two-base error, then Patty Cameron and Suzy Wright both scored on Parlman’s second two-run single. Other than the two rough innings, Johnson threw no-hit ball. The Bulldogs rallied for three runs in the sixth inning. Kara Leonard started it off with a blast off the outfield fence for a triple. Sara Sloan walked. Cassy Fobare then reached on an infield error, but two runs scored. Kate Nicholson then walked, but Phillips settled down to get the next three batters to finish the sixth, then allowed only a leadoff walk in the seventh. Megan Johnson led Heuvelton with two hits.

By Bob LaRue, North Country SportsNet

Quackenbush also struck out 13 batters to garner the win on the mound. The Larries, who finished the season 21-3, were led by Shelby McGraw with two hits and an RBI. Norwood-Norfolk and Massena baseball baseball teams also lost heart-breaking walkoffs two days earlier in state playoff openers.

MALONE EDGED OUT BY FLORAL PARK 1-0 IN N.Y. STATE SEMIFINAL

Malone's Ashley Marshall (7) pitches against Floral Park's Rachel Battle (3) in the N. Y. State Class A Girls Softball Semifinals in Waterloo, NY on Saturday.  Marshall pitched five no-hit innings, retiring every batter in every inning but the fourth, but was out-dueled by Floral Park ace Sam Giovannello who threw a one-hitter for a 1-0 Knights' win.  With one out in the bottom of the fourth, Giovannello tripled and scored on Melissa Correa's RBI single for the lone run of the game.  Malone's lone hit came with one out in the top of the seventh when Abby Premo double, but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple.(Eric Foote photo)  Game Gallery  NCSN Game Broadcast

CANTON SEASON ENDS IN STATE QUARTERFINALS TO MECHANICVILLE

Mechanicville second basemen Kelsey Hines (21) backflips the ball to first basemen Joella DeDomenico (27) on a bang-bang play at first base, but Canton’s Mataya Locke (17) beats out the throw for a hit.  Canton's late rally came up short as Mechanic-ville bounced Canton 5-2 in the New York State Class B Softball Quarterfinals. Mechanicville pitcher Anna Arceneaux (00) delivers a pitch to Canton’s Heather Lottie (7) who she stroked back up the middle.  Mechanicville jumped on Canton for two runs in the first inning and three more in the third en route to a 5-2 win in the New York State Class B semifinals.  (Nico Brown photos)

By Bob LaRue, North Country SportsNet
The Mechanicville Red Raiders jumped on Canton for two runs in the first inning and three more in the third to open a 5-0 lead, then had to hold off a last-inning rally attempt by the Golden Bears to win 5-2 and secure a berth in the New York State Class B semifinals. Shannon McBride belted a double and a single to drive in three runs to power the Raider attack. Abby Maiello slapped a pair of singles and pitcher Ann Arceneaux rapped two singles to drive in Maiello twice to account for the other two runs. Canton threatened in the second inning with runners at second and third, but could not plate the runs. The Bears finally got on the scoreboard in the seventh inning after leadoff batters Bobbie Jo Sanderson and Paige LaRue got aboard. They scored on an infield grounder by Paige LaRue and an error putting Samantha Brown onboard, but Arceneaux – who allowed just three hits – got the next two Canton batters to close out the game and ending the Bears’ season. Canton pitcher Kacie Wentworth gave up just seven hits in the loss.

MALONE'S MARSHALL FOUR-HITS LANSINGBURG IN STATE OPENER 3-0

Malone’s Ashley Marshall (7) deals a pitch with a Lansingburgh runner threatening on third base. Marshall pitched around runners in scoring position in every inning, but fired a complete game shutout while stranding nine runners on base in a 3-0 win over the Knights in the opening round of the New York State Class A Softball Playoffs.  Malone capitalized on four straight errors on the first three batters in the first inning to open a 2-0 lead.  (Kyle Coryea photo)   Game Gallery   NCSN Broadcast

Malone’s Erica Johnson beats the throw to first with two outs, which allows another runner to score from third to make it 3-0.

By Bob LaRue, North Country SportsNet
The Knights’ defense came out unsettled to start the first inning, allowing two unearned runs, and in a state playoff contest that proved to be fatal for Lansingburgh. Brittany Marshall opened with a single, but scampered around the bases when the ball skipped by the centerfielder. On the relay to third, the ball bounded away in foul territory allowing Marshall to score. Emily Sharlow then reached first on an infield error, then scored from third when pitcher Ashley Marshall reached when the Lansingburgh first baseman dropped the ball. The Knights played error-free ball the rest of the way, but the damage was done all too quickly. The game’s only other run scored when Sharlow sliced a one-out single in the third, then scored one out later on an RBI single from Erica Johnson. In the final four innings of the taut, Marshall got behind on several batters, but pitched her way out of trouble by not allowing any other runners past second base. Meg Volz had the only two-hit performance at the top of the Knights’ batting order.

And while Norwood-Norfolk defensively pulled off four double plays in four consecutive innings, the Flyers were unable to get a runner past second base against St. Lawrence Central pitcher Sarah Thayer. The Larries blanked Norwood-Norfolk 3-0 to repeat as Section X Class C Champions and to advance to the opening round of the New York State Class C playoffs against Section VII’s Ticonderoga Sentinels at 4:00 p.m. on Monday at SUNY Plattsburgh.
