Gouverneur starts season with win over BEAVER river

Swimmers from Beaver River and Gouverneur spring off the starting block to begin the 100-yard freestyle event.   The Wildcats’ larger 2015-16 boys swim team opened the season with an 89-65 victory over the visiting Beaver River Beavers. Gouverneur’s Alex Deon and Mark Dunkelberg were four-event winners – two in individual races and two relay victories. Deon captured first place in the backstroke and butterfly, while Dunkelberg swam to wins in the 50 freestyle and 500 free.

Gouverneur’s Alex Deon dashes into the closing stretch of his part of the 400-yard freestyle relay.  Four Wildcat swimmers all won two individual races and participated in two winning relay events. Mark Dunkelberg won the 100 freestyle, 200 individual medley. Alex Deon captured the 500 freestyle and 100 backstroke. Ben Sitts finished first in the 200 freestyle and 100 breaststroke. Matt Monica won the 50 free and 100 butterfly. All four boys combined efforts in winning the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays. Gouverneur also won the 200 freestyle relay.

Swimmers from Malone and Gouverneur battle side-by-side coming into the final stretch of the 4x400 freestyle relay.  The Gouverneur Wildcats boys swim team closed out its best regular-season performance ever with a 110-59 home win over the Malone Huskies. The win capped a 10-4 season, four wins better than their breakthrough season last year, when the Wildcats finished 6-6. The Gouverneur season has included breaking seven previous school records, then topping their own record marks five more times. In the final meet, Matt Monica captured the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly; Mark Dunkelburg captured the 100 backstroke and 500 freestyle; Alex Deon won the 100 and 200 freestyle; and Maddison McIntosh raced to first in the 50 freestyle. Ben Sitts, Monica, Dunkelburg and Deon combined to win the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays. McIntosh, Calaeb Hance, Hunter Hance and Jack Ferrand won the 200 freestyle relay. Malone’s lone first-place finish was in the 100 breaststroke, captured by Hunter Reynolds, edging out Ben Sitts by 96-hundredths of a second. The Huskies had several second-place finishes, including two involving Reynolds and three involving Josh Garland.

TWO MORE RECORDS WIPED AWAY BY WILDCAT SWIMMERS

Since the start of the 2015-16 swim season, the Gouverneur boys teams has taken aim at the school’s all-time leaderboard and, for the sixth and seventh times this season, has successfully knocked out previous records to have their names installed as new school record holders. In their 96-68 win over Carthage on January 26th, Mark Dunkelberg set a new 500 freestyle record and the medley relay team also logged a new school mark.

Wildcat relay team breaks another record in victory

Wildcat swim team breaks records on way to 90-73 win


Gouverneur relay team of Alex Deon, Mark Dunkelberg, Matt Monica and Ben Sitts with Coach Matt Benner after setting a new school record in the 400-yard freestyle relay event. The Wildact relay team posted the new record at 3:45.60, just besting out the old mark of 3:45.91 set back in 2009.  The Wildcats used the two new records to anchor a strong finish against Indian River in a 90-73 victory.
