Runners from Canton, Gouverneur and Potsdam pace around the third corner in the 1600-meter run.  The Golden Bears won the 2019 Section X Indoor Track and Field Championship scoring 124 points in the meet, followed by the Massena Red Raiders who scored 80. Norwood-Norfolk (78), Potsdam (78) and Gouverneur (59) rounded out the top five team finishes.

Hurdlers from Ogdensburg, Malone and Norwood-Norfolk leap past the first set of hurdles in the 60-meter hurdle event, won by Canton's Sidney Lorenc.  She also won the 300 meters, while teammate Ariana Whitaker topped the 3000-meter run. Potsdam's Sophia Janoyan won the 55 meters and long and triple jumps -- and was Field MVP. Norwood-Norfolk's Madeleine Dineen with the 600 and 1500 meters; the Flyers Alana Elliott won the shot put. Dineen and Lawrence were named Co-Track MVPs. Gouverneur' s Grace Cummings captured the 1000 meters. Ogdensburg's Rose Jenault won the high jump. canton FINISHES SEASON-LONG SWEEP. MASSENA 2ND

The Canton girls track team completed a season-long sweep with its sixth straight finish at the top of the leaderboard.  With 116 points, the Golden Bears also established their biggest margin over the rest of the field for the season at 27 points.  For the third time this season, Massena finished second, giving the Red Raiders second place for the season, their best finish in years.  Gouverneur finished third for the week and the season.  Malone finished fourth, its best position since Week 1.  Potsdam finished in fifth for the week, but fourth overall for the season.

The Canton girls track team swept to its fifth-straight competition victory, despite an expanded field of 16 teams at the annual NAC Invitational.  Teams from Section VII  --Plattsburgh, Saranac Central, AuSable Valley, Seton Catholic and Beekmantown -- along with Section III's Chittenango joined the 10 teams from the Northern Athletic Conference.  With one week remaining, Canton captured enough points in the NCSN standings to capture the regular-season title.  While Plattsburgh captured second place overall, Massena was second-best and Potsdam third-best in Section X for the second-straight week.  Section X-NAC captured six of the top eight positions at the invitational, with Section VII recording the other two spots.

CANTON WINS, WILDCATS 2ND, MASSENA 3RD IN MEET #4


Competitors from several Section X teams run around the bend in the early moments in the 1500-meter run. Canton completed its fourth meet victory this season with 100½ points, but their margin of victory closed to just 11½ points as Gouverneur (89)move back into second place ahead of Massena (82).  Norwood-Norfolk (72) pushed dup to fourth place, just ahead of Malone (68) and Potsdam (61).  (NCSN file photo by Cody Jenne)

Runners from across the Section get off to a fast start in the girls 300-meter run.  The first six teams all provided tight competition, with Canton topping the final leader board for the third straight week with 97 points. Massena climbed to second, while Potsdam and Norwood-Norfolk finished next with 73 points each. Malone edged out Gouverneur 65-64 for the fifth and sixth spots.

A Gouverneur competitor in the girls shotput event.  Canton’s Sydney Lorenc dashed to victory in the 300 meters. Canton won all three relays. Norwood-Norfolk’s Maddie Dineen won the 600 and 3000 meters, while teammate Sydney Levison claimed the 1500 meters and Alaina Elliott topped the shot put. Potsdam’s Sophia Janoyan won the 55-meter dash and the triple jump. Massena’s Hayley Castagnier topped the 60-meter hurdles. Runners from Canton and Gouverneur stay stride-for-stride throughout the girls 60-meter hurdles.  Following three heats, Massena ninth grader Hayley Castagnier clocked the best time at 10.90 seconds, just 0.07 seconds ahead of Raider teammate Violet Reyes.  Tupper Lake's Sandra Kwasniak was  third just 0.15 off the pace, while Canton's Sydney Lorenc was just 0.17 behind in a very tight race.

CANTON WINS WEEK #2, BUT POTSDAM, MASSENA CLOSE IN


Norwood-Norfolk's Sydney Levison has an early lead with teammate Maddie Deneen and runners from Salmon River and Gouverneur in the girls' 1000-meter run.  Deneen (3:25.00) outlegged Levison by by just 3.03 seconds to finish first and second in the event.  Gouverneur's Grace Cummings finished a close third, just 5.10 seconds off the lead pace.  (Sam Wangerin photo)  Meet Gallery

For the second week this season, the Canton Golden Bears took top team honors with 97 points.  However, Potsdam and Massena surged into the next two positions and tightened the leaderboard, challenging the Bears at the top.  Potsdam with 84 points trimmed Canton's win to just 13 points.  Massena jumped from fifth to third place, just a half-point behind Potsdam.  While Gouverneur finished fourth at 79½, the Wildcats also trimmed its margin behind the leading Bears.  Norwood-Norfolk moved up a notch to fifth, edging ahead of Malone by just three points.

A competitor from Gouverneur takes her third and final attempt in the Shot Put.  The event was won by Salmon River's Logan Lazore.  Alex Pinkerton also tossed for the best distance of the night at 28 feet four inches.

CANTON BESTS GOUVERNEUR ATOP WEEK 1; POTSDAM 3RD


Runners from Malone, Norwood-Norfolk, Gouverneur, Tupper Lake, Canton and Potsdam dash into the third turn of the fast-paced 300-meter run.
