Salmon River Outdueled in N.Y. State Quarterfinal 3-1

Voorheesville’s Emma Sprotbery (5) tips the ball over the net to Salmon River’s Jackie Benedict (14) who returns the volley. After being tied at a set apiece, Section II’s Voorheesville won the pivotal third set 25-18, then went on to beat Section X’s Salmon River 3-1 in the New York State Class C quarterfinals at SUNY Canton. Voorheesville won 13-25, 25-12, 25-18, 25-6. The Blackbirds’ Carolina Bablin pounded 22 points, while Libby Bork contributed 10 points and 30 assists for advancement to the State Final Four. The Shamrocks’ Kasennakohe David netted 15 points. Salmon River closed out its season at 14-6 overall. 

MASSENA DEALS CHATEAUGAY FIRST LOSS IN CHAMPIONSHIP

Chateaugay’s Carolyn Stumpf (11) goes up for the spike at the net against Massena.  The Massena girls volleyball team swept to the Section X Overall Volleyball Championship with back-to- back straight-set shutouts in the semifinals and final.

Johnstown Knocks Massena Out in N.Y.S. Quarterfinal


Johnstown’s Zara Hyde (6) responds to the offensive tip from Janisa Benedict (11) by forcing the ball back over the net for a point.  The Section X Champion Massena Red Raiders fell in three straight sets – 25-20, 25-13 and 25-12 – to Section II Champion Johnstown in the New York State Class B quarterfinals at SUNY Canton. Annie Stock paced Johnstown with 17 kills, while Jerica Holland generated 15 assists. AFTER SPLITTING FIRST SETS, HARTFORD TOPS BULLDOGS

HARTFORD 3, CHATEAUGAY 1
After splitting the first two sets, Section II’s Hartford outlasted Section X’s Chateaugay 25-18 in the pivotal third set before going on to beat the Bulldogs 3-1 in the New York State Class D quarterfinals at SUNY Canton. The Tanagers won 13-25, 25-12, 25-18, 25-6. Gwen Harsha led Hartford with 17 points and 12 kills while Morgan Wicks chipped in eight points. For Chateaugay (17-2), Carolyn Stumpf scored 12 points and Caitlin Miller powered 15 kills.

MASSENA TOPS SALMON RIVER IN OVERALL SEMIFINAL 3-0

MASSENA 3, CHATEAUGAY 0 (Championship)

Second-seeded Massena downed #3-seed Salmon River 25-22, 25-15, 25-17 in the semifinal opener of a twinbill, then following the annual volleyball awards ceremony, completed a championship sweep of the Chateaugay Bulldogs 26-24, 25-19, 25-21.  Chateaugay tried to stave off the upset with a first-set comeback that came up short in the 26-24 loss, but then could never get a foothold against the Raiders in Sets 2 and 3.  Massena took commanding leads in the final two sets, capitalizing on Chateaugay’s struggles at the net and uncharacteristic breakdowns in communication.  Massena’s surge through the playoffs was led by Tristan Thomas who had 50 sets, 18 assists and 15 service points.  Janisa Benedict who racked up 25 kills and 13 service points in the two matches.

MASSENA ELIMINATES MALONE 3-0 IN FOR CLASS B CROWN


Massena’s Janisa Benedict (11) goes way above the net to send the ball rocketing toward the Huskies side of play. Malone’s Rachel Lamica (2) tries to defend the attempt.  Tristan Thomas contributed 37 sets and 15 assists to lead the Red Raiders to their Section X Class B Championship title. Sydney Thompson and Krista Loran also pitched in with eight points each. The Red Raiders now face divisional rival Salmon River for the third time this season in the Section X Overall semifinals on Thursday, with the winner to face Chateaugay for the Championship later in the evening at SUNY Canton. Massena will also move on to State Class B quarterfinals on Saturday, also in Canton. Malone finished its season with an 11-6 record.

Canton Eliminates WILDCATS in Class C Play-In GAME 3-0


Canton’s Cianna Willmart (11) goes up for the spike on Gouverneur’s Kierra Bowman (15).  Tara Facey punched up 19 service points and contributed 12 assists while Rachel Sanderson added 13 points to pace the fourth-seeded Canton Golden Bears to a three-set win over the fifth-seeded Gouverneur Wildcats in the Section X Class C play-in round. Canton travels to Fort Covington for the semifinal round to play top-seeded Salmon River. Gouverneur’s season came to a close with a 2-15 overall record on the 2012 season.

TOP SEED SALMON RIVER  BUMPS OUT CANTON IN 3 SETS

The top-seeded Salmon River Shamrocks earned a berth in the Section X Class C Championship game with a 3-0 sweep of the fourth-seeded Canton Golden Bears. Salmon River defeated Canton 25-13, 25-14, 25-14 in the semifinal round and advance to play second-seeded Potsdam in the title game on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. at SUNY Canton. Canton finished its improved season with an overall 11-5 mark. Nicole Smoke led the way with 11 service points, six aces, three kills, 10 assists and one block. Cassie Boardway added eight service points, two aces, four kills and one assist. Jackie Benedict contributed five service points, two aces and four kills. Kasennakohe David had four service points, one ace, nine kills and one assist.

SALMON RIVER WINS CLASS C DEFEATING POTSDAM 3-0

The Sandstoners finished 11-6.

Canton Eliminates WILDCATS in Class C Play-In GAME 3-0

Ogdensburg’s Taylor Fisher returns a spike in the first game of Thursday’s match against the Sandstoners.  Potsdam’s Bridget Parks racked up 46 sets, seven assists, five points, two blocks and two kills to lead the Sandstoners. Victoria Mondragon delivered 13 points, one ace and nine kills, while Kelsey Travis added 16 points an ace and three kills to the cause. For Ogdensburg, Brittany Barr scored 17 points, while Felicia Barr provided 17 digs. Ogdensburg closed out its season at 9-7 overall. Potsdam advances to play Salmon River in the Class C title match on Tuesday.

Brushton-Moira’s Mackenzie King tips the set shot over Madrid-Waddington’s Jennifer King (12) who tries to brace for the shot.  The fourth-seeded Yellow Jackets won their first set 25-13, then bowed in the second set 25-15, but bounced back to take the final two sets to win 3-1 in the Section X Class D play-in round over fifth-seeded Brushton-Moira. Brittani Dawley tallied 13 service points to lead the Jackets, while Jen King and Janelle Trombley each contributed 11 points. M-W advances to face top-seeded and undefeated Chateaugay in a semifinals on Thursday. Brushton-Moira closed its season at 1-16.

CHATEAUGAY SWEEPS E-K COUGARS FOR CLASS D TITLE

Chateaugay’s Caitlin Miller (21) spikes the ball past Edwards-Knox’s Marissa Johnson (2).   Miller led the Bulldogs with 21 points and nine kills, while Kylie Hanley rang up 16 points and 16 assists in the championship victory. Edwards-Knox wrapped up their 2012 season with a 7-11 record. Chateaugay will play the winner of Massena and Salmon River for the Section X overall championship, then move on to play in the New York State Quarterfinals on Saturday at SUNY Canton.

CHATEAUGAY & E-K COUGARS ADVANCE AFTER 3-0 WINS

EDWARDS-KNOX 3, TUPPER LAKE 0
The second-seeded Edwards-Knox Cougers delivered a 3-0 knockout of the #3-seeded Tupper Lake Lumberjacks in the Seection X Class D semifinals. Edwards-Knox completed the three-set sweep with wins of 25-16, 25-14 and 25-14. Nicole Hendricks led the Cougars with 21 points and six kills. Edwards-Knox advances to the Section X Class D title game against the unbeaten Chateaugay Bulldogs on Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. at SUNY Canton. The Jacks finished their season at 3-12 overall.

CHATEAUGAY 3, MADRID-WADDINGTON 0
The undefeated top-seeded Chateaugay Bulldogs notched yet another shutout in sweeping fourth-seeded Madrid-Waddington in straight sets 25-10, 25-10 and 25-8.  Kylie Hanley notched 24 points, eight aces and 20 assists.  Caitlin Miller chipped in 14 kills and three blocks.  Carolyn Stumpf provided nine points, three assists and five kills.  Chateaugay takes on Edwards-Knox in the Class D Championship game on Tuesday at SUNY Canton.
