CHATEAUGAY MEETS ITS MATCH IN STATE QUARTERFINAL 3-0

Section X Class D Champion Chateaugay suffered its first loss of the season, bowing in the second round of the New York State playoffs. The previously-unbeaten Bulldogs sustained almost identical losses in three sets to Section II’s Waterford Fordians – 25-18, 25-19, 25-18 in the State Class D quarterfinals at Gloversville. Chateaugay closed its nearly unblemished season 20-1.

AUSABLE DOWNS POTSDAM 3-0 IN STATE PLAYOFF OPENER


Potsdam’s Victoria Mondragon (5) looks to tap the ball just over two AuSable Valley defender’s to put the Sandstoners ahead in the first set. The Sandstoners fell to the Patriots in three straight sets. The Potsdam Sandstoners’ strong season came to a rough close, falling to AuSable Valley in three sets, following a pair of injuries that sidelined players for state play. Potsdam’s Katie Burke (2) blocks an attempted spike from AuSable Valley’s Noelle Miller (6) to begin the second set. The Patriots captured the state playoff opening-round victory over the Sandstoners 3-0. Potsdam lost the services of starting setter Sarah Vivlamore and freshman Emily Fecketter, who were both lost for the season due to ankle injuries in the Section X overall semifinal. Both sat on the sidelines with crutches, while their team had just eight players dressed for the state match. Potsdam opened to a 14-9 lead in the first set, before the Patriots rallied to even the score at 16-16, then slowly pull away. The Sandstoners rallied back from an eight-point deficit in the third set to pull even at 17-17, but AuSable’s Mirissa O’Neill helped to close out the set, match and season on the Sandstoners with five straight service points. She led the Patriots with 11 points, nine aces, six kills and two blocks. Potsdam was led by senior Victoria Mondragon who dealt a team-best six points, three kills and an ace. Fellow senior Katie Burke added two points, one kill and one block. AuSable (18-1) advances to face Section II’s Voorheesville in state quarterfinal play on Saturday. Potsdam’s season closes at 16-4.

CHATEAUGAY SWEEPS LAKE PLACID IN STATE OPENER


Lake Placid’s Taylor Maiorca (6) blocks the spike attempt from Chateaugay’s Kim Reville (3). The Chateaugay Bulldogs continued their undefeated dominance with a three-set sweep of Lake Placid in the opening round of the New York State Class D playoffs. The Bulldogs rolled past the Blue Bombers 25-12, 25-16 and 25-10, to improve their season record to 20-0. Chateaugay’s Shelby Yanulavich racked up 20 service points, five aces and seven kills, while Kylie Hanley chipped in 10 points, two aces and 15 assists. MALONE SEASON ENDS IN STATES VS. BEEKMANTOWN

Malone’s Rachel Lamica (2) blocks the spike attempt from a Beekmantown attacker for a point in the second set for the Huskies. Beekmantown forged a three-set sweep over the Malone Huskies in the New York State Region II Class B semifinal 25-17, 25-14 and 25-13. The Eagles were led by Jordynee Ales with 23 digs, one kill, two aces and six points. Michaela Lafountain contributed 31 assists, one kill, three digs, six aces and 15 points. Shannon Ryan added 13 kills, eight digs, a block and three points. Beekmantown moves forward to state quarterfinal play on Saturday against Section II’s Johnstown at noon. Malone ended its season at 15-5.

Chateaugay polished off an undefeated 19-0 run through Section X’s regular season and playoff cycle with a three-set sweep of the Malone Huskies. After a grueling 33-31 opening set, the Bulldogs held the upper hand in two other competitive sets 25-20 and 25-19 to win the Section X Volleyball Overall Championship. Caitlin Miller delivered 12 points, nine kills and five assists, while Kylie Hanley doled out 18 assists and contributed 11 points. Shelby Yanulavich provided 10 blocks. Whitney Legacy led the Huskies with seven service points. Massena Central will host all three matches in the opening round of state tournament play. Chateaugay will play at 5:30 p.m. vs. Lake Placid, while Malone (16-4) faces AuSable Valley at 7:30 p.m.

Malone Rallies in Final Set To Win Class B Title 3-2


The Malone Huskies celebrate after winning the Section X Class B Championship banner rallying to beat the Massena Red Raiders in a thriller, three sets to two. Malone trailed as much as 12-4 in the fifth and final set, before clawing back for the championship and a berth in the New York State playoffs.  Top seeded Malone bounced back from dropping the first and third sets to defeat second-seeded Massena 22-25, 25-18, 25-13, 23-25 and 25-20. Malone was led by Janelle Heden’s 23 service points and five aces, while Rachel Lamica powered 15 points. The Huskies will advance to face Potsdam in the Section X Overall Semifinals. Massena, led by 18 points from Krista Loran and eight kills from Sam Villnave, closed its season at 10-8.

Pearson helped lead the Bears’ comeback from a first-set 25-15 loss, with 11 points served, nine aces and four kills. Canton swept the final three sets with convincing 25-12, 25-13, 25-15 scores. For the Bears (7-10 overall), Canna Willmart nailed 15 points, five aces and four kills, while Ali Mousaw added 13 points served, four assists and two aces. Meg Howard pitched in 10 points, four kills and three aces. Gouverneur’s scoring leaders included Autumn Ashley with 15 points, 11 sets, five assists, four aces, two digs and a kill. Raenell Durham added seven kills, three points served, two blocks, a dig and an assist. Laura Infield knocked down nine points, along with an assist, one set and one kill. Tia LaBrake contributed three points served, three digs, two kills, two aces and one assist, while Mackenzie McBride closed out with one point, but three each in sets, aces, digs and assists.

POTSDAM SWEEPS O.F.A. 3-0 TO CLAIM CLASS C CHAMPIONSHIP

Elna Daby provided 12 service points and three aces to spark the top-seeded Sandstoners to a three-set sweep over the #2-seeded Ogdensburg Blue Devils 25-23, 25-19, 25-16 in the Section X Class C championship match held at Massena. Sarah Vivlamore deliverd seven points, nine assists, one ace, three sets and two blocks. Victoria Mondragon chipped in six points, three aces and four kills. Ogdensburg was led by Taylor Perry with six points, 12 assists and 10 digs, while Emma Hart contributed seven points, 10 assists and three kills. Sky Hoover added 13 digs and Paige Perry had seven kills. Ogdensburg closed its season at 13-5. Potsdam will face Malone in the Section X overall semifinal in Massena.

E-K Cougars Battle Past Jackets IN "D" SEMIFINALS

Madrid-Waddington’s Jennifer King (16) taps the ball over the net for a point in the middle of the second set, in the Section X Class D semifinal at Edwards-Knox. The Cougars swept the three sets to advance. Marissa Johnson led the Cougars with 16 points, three aces, 21 sets and five kills. Nicole Hendricks added 10 points, three aces and 17 sets. Despite putting up a spirited fight, the Jackets’ season came to a close at 5-12. 

CHATEAUGAY CRUISES PAST TUPPER LAKE 3-0 IN SEMIFINAL

The top-seeded Chateaugay Bulldogs cruised to a three-set victory over the Tupper Lake Lumberjacks in the Section X Class D semifinals.  The Bulldogs ousted the Jacks 25-4, 25-8 and 25-12 to advance to the Class D Championship against Edwards-Knox.  Caitlin Miller paced Chateaugay with 22 points and four kills.  Kylie Hanley added 13 points and nine aces.  Shelby Yanulavich contributed six kills.  Tupper Lake ended its season at 4-14 overall.

Yanulavich and Caitlin Miller each provided 11 kills to help pace the Bulldogs to a 3-1 victory of the Edwards-Knox Cougars. The Cougars would not go away easily, hanging in for most the first set, then winning in the third set of the match – 25-16, 25-8, 19-25 and 25-20.

#4 Canton Turns Back Upset Bid From #5 Gouverneur

The fifth-seeded Lumberjacks scored a three-set sweep, upsetting the #4-seeded Panthers in the Section X Class D play-in.  Tupper Lake advances to face top-seeded Chateaugay in the Class D semifinals on Monday. The fifth-seeded Lumberjacks scored a three-set sweep, upsetting the #4-seeded Panthers in razor-close fashion in the first two sets – 27-25, 26-24 and 25-16 in the Section X Class D play-in.
