Huskies take down Massena to capture 57-17 victory

Massena’s Hunter Perrine (red) earns the takedown by slamming Malone’s Damen Burke (green) to the mat to earn two points during their match.  Perrine won the match with a technical fall 16-1.  Malone registered eight pins in the team victory. Sam Searles (106 pounds), James Hubbard (120), Alfred MacNeill (138), Tyler Tamini (145), Zach Simmons (170), Kyle Spinner (182), Robert Dupra (195) and Ian Maneely (285) all executed pins for the Huskies. In addition to Hunter Perrine’s win, Massena picked up pin counts from Gavin Perrine (132) and Austin Amo (152).

Gouverneur’s Derick Stowell (blue) looks to finish the pin on Massena’s Gavin Perrine (red), but Perrin breaks out of the clinch to continue the match.  Stowell earned the technical fall in a 6-4 decision over Perrine.  Gouverneur notched four wins by pins, on their way to a 64-12 win over Massena. Tyler Tupper (106), Robin Carr (120), Arden Ball (182) and Kelly Moore (285) all registered pins. Massena’s lone scoring came on pins from Austin Amo (152) and Hunter Perrine (160).

An Ogdensburg wrestler lifts his Canton opponent off the mat to earn the takedown to open their match.  On the mat in actual matches, Ogdensburg outscored Canton 25-18, but was forced to forfeit in six weight classes for lack of a challenger (six team points per forfeit), resulting in a 54-25 victory for the Golden Bears. For Ogdensburg, Tanner LaPiene pinned Tyson Luce in the 138-pound class, Cordell David secured a pinfall over Shavanah Planty at 120 pounds, Zach Roberts defeated Matthew Koscak in the 126 weight class, Brody Sheppard grabbed a 16-4 win over Angus Johnson in a bout of 145 pounders and Adam Rickett notched a 9-3 decision over Zane Atchie at 160 pounds. Canton wins came from three pins: Tyson Luce defeated Chris Cole at 132 pounds, Steven Degray pinned Mitchell Brenno in the 152 weight class and Gavin Thomas beat Trevor Heaton at 182 pounds. Levi Williams (99), Ryan Brown (106), Carson Thorton (170), Jeanette Bush (195), Justin Foster (220) and Robert Gordon (285) all won by forfeit for Canton.

Gouverneur’s Robyn Carr (blue) drives down Malone’s Sonny Johnson (green) to the mat to earn two-points on the takedown. Carr went on to defeat Johnson by technical fall 18-3.  Gouverneur racked up 46 points in a row in the middle of the meet to stay unbeaten in league play and capture the regular-season title. Wrestlers who nailed down pins included Tyler Tupper (106), Mike Labow (145), Alex Fuller (152), Kyle Elliot (182 pounds), Arden Ball (195) and Kelly Moore (285).

Wildcats defeat Golden Bears 63-18 in Season open

Gouverneur’s Kyle Jenkins lifts Canton’s Gavin Thornton over his back right at the edge of the circle. The Wildcats defeated the Bears 63-18 at Hugh C. Williams High School.

Gouverneur’s Chris Tompkins and Canton’s Kelly Moose grapple for an advantageous position, during their bout in the 285-pound class.  Gouverneur recorded six pins in their strong opening for the 2015-16 season. Joey Bush landed a pin at 152 pounds. Austin Milone (170), Tanner Donaldson (182), Daniel Mullin (132), Jesse Love (138) and Mike LaBow (145) also recorded pinfalls for the Wildcats (1-0). Massena’s Hunter Perrine (red) takes down Canton’s Matthew Hummel to earn two points during their match at the 182-pound level.  Perrine went on to defeat Hummel in the match.  Among the other winners, in the 126-pound weight class, Massena Tyler Auxley beat Canton-Potsdam's Savarah Planty. At 132 pounds, Massena's Gavin Perrine topped Canton's Tyson Luse. In the 145-pound weight class, Massena's Angus Johnson beat Canton's Michael Brown by pin. At 152, Canton's Zane Atchie defeated Massena's Devin Gauthier. In the 170-pound weight class, Canton's Carson Thornton won by pinfall over Massena's David Lashomb.

Spartans sweep duals in gouverneur, Indians 2nd

Gouverneur’s Joey Bush (blue) slams a Vernon-Verona Sherill competitor to the mat to earn the takedown giving him the lead early in the match that was later won by Bush.  In the Gouverneur Duals Tournament, South Jefferson took first place with a 5-0 record, followed by Peru earning a 4-1 mark. Gouverneur’s Daniel Mullin (blue) drives a Canastota competitor to the mat, earning a takedown and recording two points in the match.  The difference between the top three teams were just one point each. The Spartans produced a perfect 5-0 sweep of matches, but needed a 41-40 win over second-place Peru and, after a 37-37 tie with third-place Gouverneur, won the tiebreaker on pins 4-3 and overall matches 8-5, for a 38-37 final.


The Ogdensburg Blue Devils stacked up four pins and rolled to their first wrestling meet victory of the season (1-1) beating Massena in the Red Raiders’ divisional opener 48-24. O.F.A.’s 152-pound grappler Brody Sheppard pinned Massena’s Austin Amo at 5:43. Blue Devil’s Adam Rickett won by pinfall over Dave Lashomb at 3:48 of the 160-pound match. In the 120-pound division, teammate Cornell David wrapped up Massena’s Tyler Oxley in 27 seconds, and Corey Weirs pinned Anthony Hubbard in 45 seconds to capture the 182-pound class. Ogdensburg earned half its team score on forfeit wins, due to lack of opponents in four classes. For Massena, Grant Perrine out-wrestled O.F.A.’s Don Baker 10-3 at 132 pounds, while Brian Plourde won the 99-pound bout beating Tristan Richardson 10-3. Massena (0-1) posted three forfeit wins as well, at the 170, 220 and 285-pound levels.
