In a rare twist of fates, Section X officials discovered inadvertent point additions to the team totals for several matches in the section’s 2017-2018 wrestling championships. Section X Coordinator Carl Normandin told North Country SportsNet that the individual outcomes for each wrestler are not affected at all. At the league’s seeding meeting before the finals, each team designated their highest-scoring wrestler per weight class onto the “A” team and second wrestler (if there was one) onto the “B” team. To determine the overall team championship, team scores are calculated based only on the “A” team results, representing just the best two wrestlers in each class. However, during the championships on Friday (Feb. 9th), the A and B team results were inadvertently added together, when only A results should have counted for the team title. Upon further review by the Section, Gouverneur’s team total was reduced 53 points (B team total) from 234.5 to 181.5. Malone’s total was reduced 26 points, from 220 to 194. As a result of the review, Malone (194) – instead of Gouverneur (181.5) – was found to be the official 2017-18 Section X wrestling champions. The new outcome thus ended the Wildcats’ 19-year Section X Championship streak.

Malone’s Trey LaGrave (green) looks to break out of the hold from Gouverneur’s Julian Storie (grey) to earn points for the reversal in the first round of their match in the quarterfinals that Storie won via pinfall.  Championship Gallery
