The Gouverneur Wildcats completed their fifth undefeated season to claim the Section X Division II Championship with the overall top score. Jamiel Stapleton, Nathan Marshall, Jeremy Malone, and Tanner Lapiene all lost their 1st match today and were elminated from the tournament. They were all a match away from placing.  Nathan Marshall lost to John Twomey from St. Anthony's  Tanner Lapiene lost to Ryan Hetrick from Section 6. 5-0 (He looked a bit undersized all tournament) Jamiel Stapleton lost 5-3 to Section 5's Corey Farrell  Jeremy Malone was pinned by Section 5's Trent Eglenauf.

Times Union Center, Albany - In day 1 of the New York State Wrestling Championships, Five Section 10 wrestlers fall in the quarterfinals. At 99lbs Ogdensburg’s Cordell David defeated Section One’s Mikey Bruno 6-0. Cordell was defensive and took advantage of Bruno’s mistake. In Cordell’s quarterfinals match he lost to the #1 seed Dean Raymond from Section 4’s Deposit/Hancock. Massena’s Nate Marshall (113lbs) and Nolan Terrance (285lbs) both advanced to the quarter finals with victories over wrestlers from PSAL. Marshall defeated Shane Leguillow from Grand Street Campus 11-3 and Terrance pinned Harry Truman’s Noah Stanley in 3:23. Marshall lost to returning state place finisher Jon Hass from section five 13-3, Terrace also lost to a returning place finisher James O’Hagan 9-7. At 145lbs, Malone’s Jamiel Stapleton impressed the section 10 crowd with a dominating 13-0 win over Section 3’s Matt Norris. Stapleton led most of his second match against Section 3’s Alex Herringshaw in what might have been the most exciting match of the day. Stapleton was leading 3-2 with 12 seconds left in the match when Herringshaw captured the takedown to win 4-3.  Ogdensburg’s Alex Cole also won his 1st match earning a pin over Section 9’s Theodore Mapes in 5:46. Unfortunately for Cole he lost in the quarter finals to defending state champ Burke Paddock from Section 5. All of the other section 10 wrestlers lost in the 1st round.  Ogdensburg’s Cody Allen David, Canton’s Ryan Brown (106lbs), Chaz Agen (120lbs) Jared Cascanette(170lbs), Alan Clement (182lbs), Thomas Lumbard (220lbs), Gouverneur’s Daniel Mullin (120lbs), Joey Bush (126lbs), Justin Garrison (182lbs), Aaron McEathron (195lbs), Jacob Beckwith(220lbs) and Mason Wing (285lbs) and Massena’s Brian Plourde(99lbs) Michael Brown (126lbs), Alec Denny (132lbs), Gavin Perrine (138lbs), Austin Amo (145lbs), Daniel Elman (152lbs), Hunter Perrine (160lbs) all went 0-2.  Winning in the 1st round of wrestle backs for Section X were Malone’s Cameron Searles(106lbs),  Ogdensburg’s Tanner Lapiene (113lbs) and Bailey Phelps(145lbs), Gouverneur’s Aaron Bush (132lbs) and Zach Ayen (138lbs), and Massena’s Jeremy Malone (195lbs). In round 2 of wrestle backs Ogdensburg’s Cordell David, Bailey Phelps and Alex Cole ; Malone’s Cameron Searles, Massena’s Nolan Terrance, Gouverneur’s Aaron Bush and Zach Ayen all lost and were eliminated from the tournament with their 2nd loss. Section X’s Jamiel Stapleton, Nathan Marshall, Tanner Lapiene and Jeremy Malone advance to day 2 of the state tournament.

Canton-Potsdam’s Zach MacDonald crossfaces Malone’s Tyler Oliver during the 132-pound bout. Oliver pinned McDonald at 4:30 of the match. Hunter Disantis, Jon Fetcie and Caleb Cunningham all netted pins, while the Bears also picked up five wins through unopposed forfeits in a 51-23 victory over the Huskies. Gouverneur Muscles Down Malone Huskies 71-15

Gouverneur’s Joey Bush darts for a tackle at the legs, but Malone’s Tyler Oliver is able to counter it by dropping his hips. Bush goes on to win the 132-pound weight class in a 6-0 victory. Malone’s Jamel Stapleton executes a painful footlock on Gouverneur’s Joey Love and wins the match in the 152-pound weight class. Gouverneur captured wins in 12 of 15 matches, including four by pins, to defeat the Franklin Academy Huskies of Malone 71-15. The Wildcats wins by pinfall included Robyn Carr at 113 pounds, Joey Bush at 132, Aaron Bush at 138 and Zach Forsythe in the 145-pound class. Malone had one pin, executed by Cameron Searle. Gouverneur improved to 4-0 in the division, 7-2 overall. Malone dropped 0-5 division, 1-10 overall.

Ogdensburg Wrestles Past Canton-Potsdam 49-18

Canton-Potsdam’s Jon Fetcie slams Ogdensburg’s Austin Lalonde to the mat during the 120-pound match. Fetcie was one of Canton’s two active winning wrestlers. Josh Foster also won his bout, while two other Bears won by forfeit. However, O.F.A. won the other matches in a 49-18 victory.

Canton’s Dawson Kerr slams Ogdensburg’s Josh Wangler, but it was Wangler who won the match with a pin at 3:01 in the 132-pound weight class.  The Devils racked up six wins by pinfall in crafting a 59-18 victory over Canton-Potsdam. O.F.A.’s Seth Roberts, Josh Wangler, Adam Rickett, Glynn Breen, Bailey Phelps and Jordan McCormick all won by pin, while Canton-Potsdam got pins from Caleb Cunningham and Thomas Lumbard.

Malone’s Travis Beach gets dropped to the mat in a takedown by Massena’s Alec Denny in the 126-pound weight class. Denny pinned Beach at 4:44 of the match. Massena wrestlers produced five pins on the night and picked up several forfeit points for no contest in a 64-14 victory to remain undefeated at 3-0, 7-0 overall atop the standings.


General Brown Tops N.C. Wrestling Invitational

Gouverneur’s Zack Ayen puts Watertown’s Daesean Williams into a half nelson in the semifinals in the 138-pound class of the North Country Invitational at Gouverneur on New Year’s Eve. In the 145-pound class, South Lewis’ Jacob Olmstead cranks Canton-Potsdam’s Justin Foster to the mat for a two-point takedown. Olmstead won the elimination match and his next bout before falling in the elimination bracket.

Ogdensburg’s Jordan McCormick slams Sandy Creek’s Victor Halverson upside down for two-point takedown, then goes on to win 8-3 in the 152-pound weight class.

Massena Opens League Play Beating Canton-Potsdam

In the 220-pound class, Massena’s Dakota Bernard has the upper hand on Canton’s Thomas Lombard. However Lombard reversed and went on to win in a pin at 1:37 in the match.  Canton-Potsdam’s Carl Hayes gets a reversal and turns over Massena’s Austin Amo, but is unable to get his him pinned. Amo quickly regained the upper hand and went on to pin Hayes in the first match. The Red Raiders captured seven pins, while Canton had two in their league opener.  The Raiders won 68-18.
