MASSENA'S NOLAN TERRANCE: NEW YORK STATE CHAMPION!

Massena’s Nolan Terrance in a pinfall win over Canton’s Chris Tompkins.  In his 131st varsity victory, Terrance in the 285-pound weight class, edged Edwin Rubio of John Glenn HS 2-1 in the second overtime to become Massena’s first-ever state wrestling champion!  (NCSN file photo)

DRAMATIC, MOVIE-LIKE FINISH TO A CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON

Massena's Nolan Terrance finished his high school wrestling career on Saturday with a New York State title. In his 131st wrestling victory since his first match as an eighth grader, the last bout was his sweetest. Terrance edged Edwin Rubio of John Glenn HS 2-1 in the second overtime to become Massena’s first-ever wrestling champion at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association wrestling championships at the Times Union Center in Albany. Terrance had a close encounter with Irondequoit’s Cameron Rohr in a 1-0 win in the state semifinal bout. Then as fate would have it like a drama plot to a movie, Terrance got to face the only wrestler who beat him all season (39-1). Rubio defeated Terrance at during the Eastern State Classic eight weeks earlier. With the match knotted 1-1 into the second extra period, Terrance wiggled loose from his opponent for an escape point, then held off Rubio for the final 30 seconds to win the state title. Six Massena teammates stormed down from the crowd in celebration, before a tearful celebratory hug with his mom who watched from the media table as the match played out.
