SUNY CANTON MOURNS LOSS OF BASEBALL PLAYER, FRIEND

SUNY Canton lost a member of its athletic family when sophomore Jerome Branagan (Glenfield, N.Y.) of the men's baseball team died in an all-terrain vehicle accident on Sunday, May 25. Branagan, 19, played two years for the Roos as a pitcher, infielder and designated hitter. Branagan, a graduate of Beaver River Central School, was riding the vehicle with a friend along the Adams Hill Road in New Bremen when he lost control and exited the road rounding a curve. "Jerome exemplified what a student-athlete is," said SUNY Canton baseball coach Tim Mickle. "He was a terrific student and a tremendous leader and he got along very well with all of his teammates. We never had to worry about Jerome. We knew he would take care of what he had to do on and off the field. He was a wonderful person and a pleasure to coach." Branagan served as a captain during his freshman year and had eight strikeouts in 17 innings on the mound and recorded a .960 fielding percentage. As a sophomore Branagan batted .229 with nine runs and six RBIs. On the mound he recorded nine strikeouts in six innings and also had nine put outs and 21 assists. The engineering science major was a very quiet but strong leader for the Roos. "Jerome was quiet but he always had great one-liners that would crack everyone up," said junior infielder Dominic Creazzo (Massena, N.Y.). "He had a great way of keeping the team together. If there were any arguments Jerome would just give them a look and you would know it was time to stop. He was a lot of fun to be around."
